The Album Project: Full Review
If there’s a formula for writing great radio-friendly alternative rock music, Kingsfoil seems to have found it. The songs on their album ‘On Our Own Together’ range from catchy to melancholy, but their 14-song album carries itself with swagger and commands attention with every note. These tunes go down smooth and have mainstream rock appeal, but also manage to keep an alternative feel.
The album rides mainly on the strength of the songwriting and on the band’s greatest asset: Jordan Davis’ vocals. They aren’t exactly unique, but many of the album’s highlights come when he experiments with his vocals—when he plays with the words as they roll off his tongue and flips into falsetto. This is never clearer than on the album’s showstopper “Demons” when Davis launches into fast-paced falsetto. While Davis’ vocals are the focal point, the only paint the canvasses of the band’s melodies. “Dust of Our Cities” has many juxtaposed fast-paced and prolonged melodies that create an excellent multi-textured song.
Most of the songs toe the line within the mellow alternative rock box like “Give It Up Now” and “Love Is a Carnival Goldfish” which sound like they could be at home on any radio station that favors One Republic and The Fray. While still managing to sound like Kingsfoil, the songwriting grows more sultry and thoughtful on the raw “Keeps Me Breathing.” At other points, Davis channels John Mayer on “Summer Comes.”
Low points on the album—few as they are—include the rather disappointing title-track “On Our Own Together” that starts off with one of the album’s catchiest licks but soon fades into a boring song. Other songs like the closing track “If You Love Something You Push it Away” are just confusing in their failure to adhere to the band’s style. Overall, however, ‘On Our Own Together’ finds the band gaining confidence, identity, and putting down a record full of memorable and undeniably catchy songs.
better than anything you've ever listened to before.. EVER.
i picked up the physical copy of this album a few weeks ago at their cd release show and literally haven't played anything else since then. there's no point in listening to anything else, because really nothing else can compare..! after each album you think "wow, this is amazing, definitely can't beat it!" and then their next album is that, plus sooo much more! especially this time. the level of intensity shown through the music has grown directly with their musicianship and character. this album is definitely a must buy, so why wait?! get it now! :)
The wait is over
I have been a kingsfoil fan for 5 years now. I have all of their Ep's and have been waiting for an album for quite sometime. It was well worth the wait. I can honestly say this is one of the best albums that i own. What i love so much about kingsfoil is that no two songs sound the same. This album is a must have!
