iTunes Review

Donna Summer was the undisputed disco queen: she was there at its birth, she was there at its peak, and she was one of the few to survive its ugly death. It all started with “Love to Love You Baby,” a collaboration with Euro-disco maestro Giorgio Moroder that is one part hypnotic electro, and two parts porno movie. The juxtaposition of Summer’s feathery vocals with Moroder’s motorized pulse proved a sensation. (While the version here purports to be from Summer’s sold-out 1979 show at the Universal Amphitheater in L.A., it sounds suspiciously like the edited studio version.) Summer and Moroder created a magnificent sequel in the proto-techno of “I Feel Love,” but Summer was already expanding her horizons. “On the Radio,” “MacArthur Park,” and “No More Tears,” a duet with Barbra Steisand, all prove that Summer was as comfortable singing soft pop ballads as she was dancefloor anthems. Even so, there’s no denying that the disco beat provided the pulse for her career, and Greatest Hits alone could easily soundtrack an all-night party — just make sure it ends with “Last Dance,” surely this era’s own “Over the Rainbow.”

The Diva of Greatest Hits

Greatest Hits: On the Radio Volumes One and Two heralds what has unfortunately become Summer's most prolific category: The Greatest Hits Collection. You'll be hard-pressed to find another recording artist with more hits compilations. Even us die-hards have lost count as to how many have been released. With that said, On the Radio with its inspired cover art marked the last official release for Donna as her reign at Casablanca Records came to an end. (She jumped ship to sign with David Geffen's eponymous label.) All of her hits as of the close of 1979 and for that matter, disco, are represented here—brilliantly sequenced and mixed by Giorgio Moroder. The only drawback is that some of the most commercially successful hits like Hot Stuff and Bad Girls are paired down too much—losing some of the zeal of the originals. You will find not one, but two versions of the now classic, On the Radio—a shorter more radio-friendly edit and a longer mix that was more suitable for clubs way back when. To note, there's an even longer version on the Casablaca (4 CD) Story compilation—also on iTunes. The now historic duet with Streisand is also present in a longer edit. All in all, if you're gonna make your way through the jungle of Summer's greatest hits, On the Radio is definately the first worthy step. Just beware of any compilation that boasts any titles like Na Na Hey Hey, or Back off Bugaloo. Run and hide as these are not Donna Summer hits. They only occasionally feature a young Summer—way before she became a hit-maker.

The Queen!

"Who's the queen of disco? " "Uhh.... Donna Summer?" "Now turn it around." "Summer Donna?" "Now say it faster. "Summadonna? Simmadowna? Simmer down now, SIMMER DOWN NOW!" I just love MacArthur Park. Who doesn't love songs about cakes in the rain? For real!

A "Greatest Hits" that truly deserves to be called "great"

Not content to release an album that simply compiled Summer's hits and arranged them chronologically, producer Giorgio Moroder chose to arrange these songs thematically and stylistically and added overdubs to several tracks. The result is three suites of non-stop music. If you're looking for the definitive versions of "Hot Stuff" and "Bad Girls" you should go with the "Bad Girls" deluxe reissue which has both the original and 12" extended versions (Moroder apparently thought these two songs needed some freshening as they had received non-stop club and airplay the preceding year). If you're looking for some great Summer/summertime music to crank-up this is it.

Donna Summer's title as the "Queen of Disco" wasn't mere hype — she was one of the very few disco performers to enjoy a measure of career longevity, and her consistent chart success was rivaled in the disco world only by the Bee Gees. Summer was certainly a talented vocalist, trained as a powerful gospel belter, but then again, so were many of her contemporaries. Of major importance in setting Summer apart were her songwriting abilities and her choice of talented collaborators in producers/songwriters...
