iTunes Review

The Eagles’ third album, 1974’s On the Border, continued to play up the band’s “outlaw”  or “Desperado” image with another collection of well-paced country-influenced rock (and a tune called “James Dean”). Allegedly, new producer Bill Szymczyk was brought in to replace the band’s original boardman Glyn Johns in order to toughen up the group’s sound, but much of the album’s appeal remains in the sweet, laidback approach of Bernie Leadon’s tightly harmonized tribute to then recently departed country-rock singer Gram Parsons (“My Man”), the group’s solid, conventional take on Tom Waits’ “Ol’ 55,” and the bluegrass-inspired “Midnight Flyer” sung by the much overlooked Randy Meisner, who also contributed the thoughtful “Is It True.” The band had two surefire rock radio singles in the quick-pump of “Already Gone,” that showcased the addition of new guitarist Don Felder, and the slightly grander “The Best of My Love” (one of two tracks produced by original producer Glyn Johns) that became one of their biggest hits, while the title track nudged the group into R&B territory.

One of my Favorite LPs

The title cut rocks (as does this whole album)! A wide variety of song styles show on this LP where they add Don Felder, their best guitarist. This LP is full of gut-wrenching, emotional writing with a perfect delivery (lots of killer slide guitar). Of course Already Gone and The Best Of My Love are classics, but listen to You Never Cry Like A Lover, My Man, Ol'55 and Is It True to get a sense of why this is one of the best bands in the world. DO NOT BUY Eagles collections or Greatest Hits and miss out on the great songs overlooked by the masses. Buy every LP instead.

classic record

This is their best album. Best collection of country-rock songs. For a great idea of what the group is about, check out this album, Hotel California, and The Long Run. Enjoy!

Bernie Leadon's best work!

My Man has some of the most powerful lyrics that The Eagles have made over the 37 years of the existence of thier music. Better yet, in my mind, Bernie Leadon has the best voice of all of the band members than and now. Basically, it is surely worth buying the whole On The Border album. Even though that James Dean and Is It True aren't as great as others on the album, especally because the single song prices went up. My Man Lyrics are Below: Tell me the truth, how do you feel? Like you're rollin' so fast that you're spinnin' your wheels? Don't feel too bad, you're not all alone We're all tryin' to get along With ev'rybody else try'n' to go their way You're bound to get tripped, and what can you say? Just go along 'til they turn out the lights There's nothin' we can do to fight it No man's got it made till he's far beyond the pain And we who must remain go on living just the same I once knew a man, very talented guy He'd sing for the people and people would cry They knew that his song came from deep down inside You could hear it in his voice and see it in his eyes And so he traveled along, touch your heart, then be gone Like a flower, he bloomed till that old hickory wind Called him home My man's got it made He's gone far beyond the pain And we who must remain go on living just the same My man's got it made He's gone far beyond the pain And we who must remain go on living just the same We who must remain go on laughing just the same

With five number one singles, fourteen Top 40 hits, and four number one albums, the Eagles were among the most successful recording artists of the 1970s. At the end of the 20th century, two of those albums — Their Greatest Hits (1971-1975) and Hotel California — ranked among the ten best-selling albums ever, and the popularity of 2007's Long Road Out of Eden proved the Eagles' staying power in the new millenium. Though most of its members came from outside California, the group was closely...
