iTunes Review

Often compared to a young Rod Stewart (both were Scottish and raspy), Frankie Miller started off experimenting with rootsy genres like country, blues, rockabilly, and soul. So landing Brinsley Schwartz as the backing band for his 1973 debut album, Once in a Blue Moon, made perfect sense. “You Don't Need to Laugh” opens sounding a little like Long Player–era Faces, as Miller croons and wails his weathered inflections over bluesy electric guitars, folky acoustic six-strings, old-fashioned saloon piano, and female backing singers. The following soul ballad “I Can’t Change It” impressed Ray Charles enough that he covered it on his 1980 album Brother Ray Is at It Again. You can really hear the Brinsleys’ signature sound surface in the boogie-rock strut of “Candlelight Sonata in F Major” and the harmonious twang-rock of “In No Resistance.” Though most of these songs are Miller’s, he gives Bob Dylan’s “Just Like Tom Thumb's Blues” a deep country-rock flavor, while Willie Dixon’s “I’m Ready” gets a slow, boozy swagger.

Once in a Blue Moon

The first inkling of a major talent! Frankie Miller will go down in history as an artist that influenced many but never achieved the commerical success he deserved. This album not only shows off Miller's exceptional vocals but also lets him demonstrate what would become his most underrated skill - songwriting. Ray Charles recorded Frankie's "I can't change it," and this would prove to be the first of many artists to record his material. It's too bad there isn't any recording of Frankie in the band Jude (with Robin Trower and James Dewer), but this is a great example of the early talent from the legendary Scot. If I soulnd like a fan, I am. I've bought everything he's released in the states, and unfortunately that will have to do. Buy it (and anything else you can find from the Scottish FM), enjoy it, and for God's sake don't keep it to yourself!

Blue-eyed soul singer Frankie Miller made his name on the English pub rock circuit of the early '70s, and spent around a decade and a half cutting albums of traditional R&B, rock & roll, and country-rock. In addition to his recorded legacy as an avatar of American roots music, his original material was covered by artists from the worlds of rock, blues, and country, from Bob Seger and Bonnie Tyler to Lou Ann Barton and the Bellamy Brothers. And Miller himself...
