Album Review

Shortly after fellow rap producers Pharrell and Timbaland released solo albums of their own, Swizz Beatz served up One Man Band Man, and like those of his peers, it fails to fulfill its potential, held back by repetitive, inane raps and relentless, self-indulgent boasting. Prior to this misstep, Swizz had been on a hot streak. Most notably, he produced three of the best songs on Beyoncé's 2006 chart-topper B'day ("Get Me Bodied," "Upgrade U," "Ring the Alarm") as well as her number one soundtrack hit "Check on It" (from The Pink Panther). He'd also recently produced tracks for Jay-Z, T.I., the Game, Ice Cube, Busta Rhymes, Gwen Stefani, R Kelly, Eve, and UGK. Given such contacts, it's puzzling why Swizz didn't ask at least a few of these superstars to return the favor and contribute to his album. That's what Pharrell and Timbaland did on their respective solo albums, In My Mind (2006) and Shock Value (2007), and that's indeed what Swizz did on his previous album, G.H.E.T.T.O. Stories (2002). The relentless boasting of One Man Band Man suggests Swizz was on such a high in the midst of his 2006 hot streak, he figured he could go it alone à la Kanye West, a rap producer who likewise stepped into the spotlight after crafting hits for others. Swizz isn't anywhere hear the rapper Kanye is, unfortunately, and unlike Timbaland, it doesn't seem like he employs ghostwriters: on the contrary, he seems fully confident of his rapping ability, and he's unafraid to put himself front and center on One Man Band Man. The album suffers for it. As expected, the productions are lively, no question about that (Eve's contemporaneous single, "Tambourine," is a good point of comparison), but Swizz jeopardizes them with his inane raps, which are repetitive to the point of insanity. When the album's rare guest raps (Drag On on "Bust Ya Gunz"; Lil Wayne [whose gonzo verse is the album highlight], R Kelly, and Jadakiss on "It's Me Bitches [Remix]") do turn up, they're a relief. Had Swizz included more guest features like these, and consequently put himself on the sidelines more frequently, One Man Band Man would be a much more easily enjoyable listening experience. [One Man Band Man was also made available in a "clean" version with all profanity removed.]

Swizz Beatz-One Man Band Man

Longtime New York producer Kasseem Dean has been pumping out hits for the biggest stars and grown a lot of fame for his high energized productions. He gives the producer turned rapper thing a shot, hoping to attain the same success as Dr. Dre or Kanye West. Product Man: The Individualz produce repetitive loop as Swizzy delivers a catchy hook, but only a decent intro, I expected a little more energy. 3/5 It's Me Snitches: Swizzy shines here with another great production, the club banger is the perfect first single. His energized bouncy flow is fitting and gets by due to the excellent production. 4/5 Big Munny: Produced by Nottz, the bouncy production is fitted with a bouncy chorus of "here come big munny, here come big munny". A decent cut but lyrically it isn't that good. 3/5 Bust Ya Gunz: Drag On adds a solid verse as Needlz production is great. Swizzy fits the beat with his hyped up "ohhohhh" and energized hook. Nice track here. 3.5/5 You Know Your Boy Did That: Snags produced, the kick snares and slow moving beat are an interesting move. The hook was decent, but lyrically it doesn't fit Swizzy too well, as it gets a little dull. 3/5 The Funeral: Proabably one of Swizzy's best lyrical tracks, Neo Da Matrix's piano and sample work nicely as Swizzy tells stories of the hood. Nice track here. 3.5/5 Take A Picture: Excellent feel good joint here, the evident sample makes the track and his "getcha cameras out, get your flash right" sounds good, but the next part is a little forced. Great feel good vibe though. 4/5 Top Down: Anthematic track, the horns sound good and the production is nicely done by Swizz. Lyrically it isn't that great, has catchy lines but lyrically its same old same old. Nice hook. 3.5/5 Money In The Bank: Production was by Young World Music and total club with high energy. The chipmunk voice will be hated or loved, Swizz tells a story of a girl that asks for too much from a guy. Decent and high energized. 3.5/5 Part Of The Plan: Chris Martin of Coldplay adds some extremely emotional vocals as Swizzy's piano and clap production is fitting. Great track here that is filled with emotion. 4/5 It's Me Remix: Great remix, Weezy kills it with his French related rap, Kellz adds his rap/singing verse that is catchy "everytime I shoot a shot it go Swizz!". Intersting move to change the beat with Jada, but it was cool. Nice remix. 5/5 Swizzy's debut solo album, was decent. For those who don't care really about lyrics and more of just feel good club music, bump this. For those otherwise, I wouldn't cop it, lyrically Swizz is not Kanye West or Pharrell for that matter. However his high energy lets him get by as well as the excellent production. "It's Me Snitches" and the remix are the best highlights among several decent cuts, "Money In The Bank", "Top Down" and "Take A Picture". "The Funeral" and "Part Of The Plan" are Swizz at his lyrical best and emotionally shine. "Product Man", "Big Munny" and "You Know Your Boy Did That" were just lukewarm cuts. Decent album, good for the club bumpers. Rating 7 out of 10
