iTunes Review

Recorded live at a small Boston venue, One November Night serves up Johnny A.’s tasty guitar licks with clarity and bite. The former Peter Wolf sideman reaffirms his commitment to spare, clean musicianship with a slight jazz accent, ably supported by bassist Jesse Bastos and drummer Chris Farr. Johnny runs through the full spectrum of his sound, spicing up material drawn from his first two albums with a few previously unrecorded numbers. His affinity for crisp Chet Atkins-style picking is highlighted on country-slanted treatments of Lennon/McCartney’s “The Night Before” and Chuck Berry’s “Memphis, Tennessee,” as well as the jaunty “Tex Critter.” “Two Wheel Horse” and “Song Singin’” catch him working in a meatier rock mode, while his renditions of Jimmy Webb’s “Wichita Lineman” and his own “Krea Gata” are spun from dreamy gossamer notes. If there’s a showstopper here, it’s “Jimi Jam,” a nicely blended medley of Hendrix tunes combining fret-frying dramatics with more subtle shadings.

Truly lucid! Joe Satriani and Eric Johnson blended together

I am very stingy with my recommendations. Last guitarist receiving my seal of approval was Monte Montgomery (taking a bow in apprecaition). Still number one, but Johnny A. is a close second. Call it destiny, but I ran across Johnny A. on my local blues station 105.5FM in Madison, WI. Love at first listen. Don't believe me. Really don't. Take a listen. They are all absolutely awesome so save some coin and spend the $9.99!

The master of tasteful tone

It's hard enough to capture this type of deft, polished performance in the studio. Johnny A does it live. Truly the king of tone, every note is ear candy. Here's a guy that can play it all but knows how to dish it out in tasty spoonfuls rather than jamming it down our throats. Even the tracks that appeared on his previous CD's have had the benefit of years of touring, gaining a few surprises along the way. This is a must have CD if you love guitar and if you love masterful, non-repetitive instrumentals. Must listen loud!
