Album Review

Bob James's first recording for his Tappan Zee label, which has been reissued on CD along with virtually James' entire output by Warner Bros., is typically lightweight. Although Grover Washington, Jr. has two spots on soprano and trumpeter Jon Faddis is in the brass section, James' dated Fender Rhodes keyboard is the lead voice throughout the six pieces, which include two adaptations of classical works. Only a lightly funky version of "Feel Like Making Love" rises above the level of pleasant background music.

Early Bob James

I wish iTunes would date albums correctly by the original production date rather than their personal entry date. This folks is a very early Bob James and dates back almost 30 years. What can be heard is James finding his place in the world of music. A very entertaining album but not a current example of what Bob James has developed into today.

Bob is Always Funky

Every bit of music on this album can be sampled. Best get it cleared though. Collect all Bob James' stuff. You'll hear Ghostface Killah, Run DMC, Pete Rock, Rakim; everybody. (well, their samples anyway). Get This for your listening enjoyment...now.

Thanks for the Heads Up, Man of Cool!

Although this album was origianlly released in April, 1974, then again on CD in October 1995, it's still Bob James all the way. There is something about his touch and style on the keyboard which, judging by this album, he developed early and has retained throughout his musical career. It's unmistably Bob James. If you like him, sample these tunes - you'll buy the album just like I did. Maybe it's not his best work, but it still very, very good.

Bob James' recordings have practically defined pop/jazz and crossover during the past few decades. Very influenced by pop and movie music, James has often featured R&B-ish soloists (most notably Grover Washington, Jr.) who add a jazz touch to what is essentially an instrumental pop set. He actually started out in music going with a much different direction. In 1962, James recorded a bop-ish trio set for Mercury, and three years later his album for ESP was quite avant-garde, with electronic tapes...
