iTunes Review
The pedal steel signifies alt-country. The finger-picked acoustic guitars lean towards folk. The muted, unassuming, sometimes too-buried vocals suggest that murky sadcore space where Cat Power usually hangs her tunes. Once a Denver-based drummer (she played for a spell with Band of Horses) and now Seattle-based singer-songwriter, Sera Cahoone’s second album creates a spell that is thorough and at times overwhelming. The tunes are strong and lasting but often obscured by the mostly rustic instrumentation (banjo, violin, pedal steel). Cahoone lurks behind the tunes as much as commands them, and she specializes in a high lonesome area where things sound as if they might be going bad even when they have the possibility of looking up. The extra energy behind “Happy When I’m Gone” practically sounds like the dawning of a new day when put next to the gorgeous but downcast drear of “Tryin’” or the solemn near prayer-like album closer “Seven Hours Later.” It makes for an effective 3 a.m. album.
Customer Reviews
Pleasantly Surprised .....
I'm not the biggest fan of female lead vocals or twangy alternative rock/country but this album was worth the risk. Glad that i stepped outside of my comfort zone and took the chance. Turned out to be an album to "just press play".
VERY worthwhile sophomore effort.
I'll be honest, pedal steel is probably my favorite instrument ever. That this record employees it liberally is a huge plus. And the songs are just so good. I heard "Only as the Day is Long" on a KEXP podcast and knew then and there that I needed to get the record. "Baker Lake" "Seven Hours Later" might even be better than the title track. Sera's got a beautiful, really soothing voice. This album fits in pretty perfectly next to my Ryan Adams and Iron & Wine stuff, it's like a slowed down Band of Horses (makes sense, given her background).
Sublime
I had the pleasure of watching Sera and her band play a solid set after a long alchohol soaked day. The songs and her precence cut through the fog . Since then I keep checking out her website looking for next show. Buy this album it is a grower.
