Album Review
Although billed as an emo band, the Graduate take just as much inspiration from atmospheric ‘80s rock and the melodic, poppy material of latter day Jimmy Eat World. Their first release for Razor & Tie (and second album overall) relies on a familiar format — slick, minor-key songs turned into towering anthems, with falsetto vocals and delayed guitar riffs that suggest the influence U2 — but the Graduate tackle the template with as much conviction as anyone else, making Only Every Time a lesson in coloring within the lines instead of thinking outside the box.

The Album Project: Full Review
With ‘Anhedonia’, The Graduate released a killer rock record, but it was still a record that wasn’t above a few glaring flaws. With ‘Only Every Time’, however, the band has lived up to any hype that has ever been placed on them, delivering a sophomore album that may prove to be their defining moment.
‘Only Every Time’ takes a little bit darker approach to the standard pop/rock genre, adding, what feels like, more texture and variety to the songs. “Don’t Die Digging” should instantly remind you of bands like Saosin with the technical guitar riffs and the way singer Corey Warning pushes the strong melody. “All At Once” also dives down the darker rabbit hole with a sound similar to Unwritten Law’s distinctive style. Even though the entire album fits securely in the general rock genre, this album does a brilliant job of making it incredibly difficult to pigeonhole the band. Every track ventures down a slightly different path, continually expanding the arena that the band resides in.
Beyond just being able to be labeled “catchy” by reviewers, the record’s strongest suit is a replay value higher than the vast majority of the other albums released this year. It’s great that “Choke” makes an impact before even reaching the chorus, but the important thing is that you can listen to the song over and over without wanting to actually choke on the track’s instantly infectious verses. I’ve woken up, not once, but several times with the lyrics, “what’s the point in waking when everything around me is falling…”, from the song “Stuck (Inside My Head)”, rattling around inside my head which seems, on many levels, to reinforce The Graduate’s ability to make their songs sticky.
I’m not sure if the band’s label folding about two years ago, leaving them back at the beginning, had an impact, but I wouldn’t be surprised if it was the catalyst that transformed these songs from good to near perfect. The lyrics are littered with references to things being hard, but never letting circumstances get the best of them, with the theme of persistence showing up more than once. From the opening song that’s hard to shake to the final moments that make you want to listen again, there really is something for everyone. It doesn’t matter where you’re coming from, you’re gonna need ‘Only Every Time’ in your collection.
amazing
one of the best albums I've heard in awhile. I've listened to it all the way through at least 15 times since i've gotten it. It's feeling is a lot different than their last album, but still great. GET IT and their first album if you haven't.
