iTunes Review

It’s perfect synergy to have Richard Gottehrer and The Raveonettes’ Sune Rose Wagner producing Dum Dum Girls’ big studio record. Once just bedroom recording project, Dum Dum Girls are now a real shimmering guitar band that sounds like the perfect foil to The Raveonettes. Elements of The Jesus and Mary Chain mix with the girl-group pop presence of “Bedroom Eyes” and “Just a Creep.” This is garage pop recorded in a very classy and classic garage. Surf riffs and handclaps leak out of the mix, above the wall of sound, with singer Dee Dee guiding things with the beauty of once-upon-a-time Gottehrer protégé Blondie on the charming “Heartbeat.” The passing of Dee Dee’s mother haunts tracks with the malingering sway of “Coming Down,” the tense shuffle of “Wasted Away,” the vocal ache of “Teardrops on My Pillow” and the sorrowful pull of “Hold Your Hand.” “Caught in One” wonders aloud at how awful the year has been. Yet this sorrow doesn’t ground the sonic excitement here; the growing pains only make the group more real.

Customer Reviews

the best new rock group since....

since i can't remember - everything i love: fuzzed out guitars, melodies in buckets, the vocals....wow. all i can say is, they have a sound that makes my spine tingle and that's not happened in YEARS! i'm gonna have a house party just so i can blast this.

Pretender Cobras

Sounds like Chrissie Hynde singing with The Detroit Cobras. Not a bad combo!

Way to step it up!

Loved the first album, but this is just awesome. Makes the songwriting and singing on the first seem tentative and the country influence blending with the already established surf guitar/girl group blend is a nice touch as well.

Since they emerged at a time when C-86-inspired acts like Vivian Girls and the Pains of Being Pure at Heart were in vogue, it’s little wonder that California’s Dum Dum Girls — a group whose '60s-inflected lo-fi pop brings to mind acts like Black Tambourine and Dolly Mixture — became something of a sensation on the indie circuit soon after the release of their first single. In 2008, lead singer Kirstin Gundred (aka Dee Dee) began making solo recordings as Dum Dum Girls, deriving the name...
