Album Review

Roy Bennett is Ben Templeton, a Dallas guitarist-singer/songwriter leading a septet. He thumbs the fed-up nose of Luddites everywhere on "Big Deal" (ha ha), but he is equally, wryly hard on himself on "I Sucked Today." His music flits around a bit, from no-frills, straightforward, midtempo guitar pop with traces of Texas twang and southern roots rock, to white neo-reggae like "Conspiracy" or the London Calling-Clash-lite "Just the Other Day." But it's all mixed so low that his wavering, nasal vocals are the prime element. Oddly, that he sounds a little like he has a head cold actually works to his advantage; like Graham Parker, it adds credence to his main facet — his put upon Everyman persona.

Love This!

Just discovered this CD ... it's a great pick-me-up. Not to mention the whole tongue in cheek eff-u lyrics. Find myself humming "Hideaway" in the shower. Fun and light without being saccharine.

Bangin Horns!

The thing about this record is that it's all over the place in a good way. From the Tom Petty like "Conspiracy" to the Lyle Lovett big band like "What Happened to the Rain". Good catchy verses and choruses and interesting bridges make for an all around great album to listen to while cruising down the road. The way Roy rags on himself is hilarious and makes you feel like your not the only one with problems. Killer baritone sax on Conspiracy! If you want a great all around record to listen to, this one goes thru a bunch of styles with good harmonies and vocal performances. The fact that it's not all perfect, as far as performances, makes you think the recording was loose and laid back. Like they were having fun with it. Overall, I highly recommend this record to anyone who likes MUSIC. Enjoy the ride!
