iTunes Review

Signing to Seattle’s Barsuk Records didn’t stop Say Hi’s Eric Elbogen from recording Oohs & Aahs in his home studio, where he'd recorded his previous works (see: Say Hi to Your Mom).  Elbogen’s voice is warm and intimate, by turns husky, mumbly, puppy-dog sweet and often sounding on the verge of an emotional meltdown. His timbre is reminiscent of Arcade Fire’s Win Butler, and even though Say Hi’s music is not as layered or busy as that band’s, the two make perfect iPod-mates. Like 2007’s The Wishes and the Glitch, Oohs & Aahs is full of winsome love songs, with some magnificently catchy beats and vocal hooks. Whether he’s bleakly looking ahead to better days (“November Was White...”) or barely containing surging desires (“Oh Oh Oh Oh...”), Elbogen’s sense of pop structure and melody is his greatest strength. Applying a “less is more” philosophy, along with “reuse, recycle,” a single guitar note might stay in your head for hours. A few songs, like “Sallie’s Heart Is Stone” and “Dramatic Irony” pulse with a dark cynicism and unease. Pop is best served with an edge; Oohs & Aahs is a stellar model.

response!!!

whoever was the one who used the phrase, "shelling out $50 to ticketmaster" - i have to just make one teensy comment. music, within itself, is not meant to be a big extravaganza you have to attend (as a concert is). music is about what you're feeling at the moment, something to help you along as you try to make sense of what life throws at you. something to cheer you on as you overcome something, or something to be your study partner when you're all by yourself. something to be there for you. it doesn't matter if you want to trek 500 miles to go see the band, or if you want to "shell out" some cash to a ticket counter to watch them perform. it's about how you felt when you were listening to the music. when i heard this, i immediately thought of the bus ride i take between schools every day and could totally picture myself staring out the stained, dirty window into the bleak mid-morning with my iPod headphones shoved hastily into my ears. so when you asess music, don't judge by what you would do for the music. judge by what the music could (and will) do for you. thanks for the comments. (and from my perspective, i think this band rocks.)

Very fresh

Wow. I am very blown away by this record. I think it is highly inventive and new. My favorites are Elouise and Hallie and Henry.

Oohs & Aahs, PT Walkley, U2

These are my favorite 3 albums of the year. Great month for music! n
