Album Review

Ponty embarks on more experiments in the future-is-now world of synthesizers and sequencers, where the painstakingly programmed machines often seem to generate an irresistible momentum of their own. As on Individual Choice, Ponty's melodies are immediately appealing in an almost Continental manner, whether spelled out on violin, violectra, or on the sequenced synths that set up the ostinato underpinning. Ponty has even less help than before — no more than one or two supporting players on a few tracks. One of them is George Benson, who does his flavorful jazz/funk thing over Ponty's rhythm computer on "Modern Times Blues"; the other is Chick Corea, who appears on two tracks. This is almost as essential as Individual Choice, and in some ways, even more confident and assured. ~ Richard S. Ginell, Rovi

Open your mind...

Not his best album, but the first track "Open Mind" is one of the most imaginative songs I have ever heard. Great track.

A More Reflective Recording

This is a more somber Ponty. Except for Watching Birds, there are no breakout pieces. The title track is rhythmic but dull. Solitude is a reflective piece but is dominated by a few low note chords. Modern Times and Orbital Encounters hearken back to the Cosmic Messenger and the Imaginary Voyage LP’s (yes I had these in vinyl back then). Watching Birds is the exception. It is a beautiful piece that would easily be overlaid on a migratory bird documentary. The melody fits the imagery the title invokes. Chick Corea is featured on keyboard here and with typical note-bending style, he turns this piece into his own. I often wonder why Ponty and Corea did not collaborate more on compositions.

Get Watching Birds

I owned this album when it was released originally. This isn't my favorite Jean-Luc Ponty album but Watching Birds saves it. There are many songs I loved when I was younger that I find less than inspiring today. Watching Birds isn't one of them. Twenty-five years later it still amazes me!

It has been a long, fascinating odyssey for Jean-Luc Ponty, who started out as a straight jazz violinist only to become a pioneer of the electric violin in jazz-rock in the '70s and an inspired manipulator of sequencers and synthesizers in the '80s. At first merely amplifying his violin in order to be heard, he switched over to electric violin and augmented it with devices that were associated with electric guitarists and keyboardists, like Echoplex machines, distortion boxes, phase shifters, and...
