iTunes Review
Georgia native Kaki King’s instrumental prowess has been on display since her 2003 debut album Everybody Loves You, and on 2006’s …Until We Felt Red, King expanded her palette even wider, adding atmospheric vocals, horns and pedal steel guitars, drawing further attention from Sean Penn who featured her work in his film Into the Wild, and Foo Fighters’ Dave Grohl who added her to his instrumental arsenal for Echoes, Silence, Patience & Grace. 2008’s Dreaming of Revenge, worked up with Grammy-Award winning musician and producer Malcolm Burn (Peter Gabriel, Emmylou Harris) at his upstate New York studio, takes King further into both conventional songwriting (she sings with authority on many of the tracks) and into inventive instrumental scenarios. The otherworldly yet pastoral sweep of “Open Mouth” asserts a desolate feel that’s part-desert, part outer-space, as notes trickle quietly behind the gentle, rhythmic veneer. “Air and Kilometers” aptly describes King’s galaxy traversing instrumental force. “Saving Days in a Frozen Head” features King’s endearing child-like croak and points towards expanding her base beyond progressive music fans into the world of pop.

Amazing talent
Kaki King is an amazing talent, and this is my favorite work of hers yet. Saw her perform live just last week at TED and wanted so badly to hear the voice... and now, here it is. Her background as a drummer not only gives her work unique and genius percussive rhythmic structure, but the same inventive mind now reveals its ability to take us on an even richer and more complex journey with the innocent but knowing quality of her vocals. The girl who beat the boys at guitar now shows she has it all. Indeed, can anyone who has heard this music really be a bad person?
Remarkable.
I saw this and thought, Alternative, mkay I'll check it out. Boy am I glad I did. This album I can kick back and relax to or bump it in my car. This is one of the most outstanding alternative albums I've heard in a long time. It almost has a wide range of genres which is nice so everyone can relate to the music.
Kaki is King
I’m not a huge instrumental music fan. Yes, I appreciate fantastic musicians, but still I can rarely sit through an entire album of instrumental music (I need a chorus a bridge, etc.). That is precisely why I am so appreciative of this album. I’ve always known Kaki to be an incredible guitarist, but this album brings her up volumes in my book. Why she didn’t sing all the time, I’ll never know, because I LOVE her lyrics and her voice. I love this album, front to back… and have NO problem with the instrumental tracks.. .in fact I love them. Standout “singing” tracks Life Being What It Is, Pull Me Out Alive and Saving Days in a Frozen Head. Standout instrumental tracks are Sad American, Montreal, Open Mouth and I Need a Girl Who Knows a Map… I just about named almost all of the tracks (and I can’t say there is a bad apple in the bunch), which means you might as well buy the album. I can’t say enough good about Miss Kaki King.
