Godflesh’s Justin Broadrick is a musical adventurer. While his résumé reads mostly on the heavy side, having produced or remixed music for Pantera, Isis and Pelican, and involving himself in Napalm Death and Godflesh, Broadrick has also been spending a great deal of time in his studio, piling up the instrumental tracks by his lonesome and coming up with some mesmerizing results. Opiate Sun is a four-song EP that captures the powerful, often soothing, wall of sound that frequently hides Broadrick’s vocals. Appropriately enough, the EP is released on Sun Kil Moon’s and Mark Kozelek’s Caldo Verde label. Stylistically, Jesu often sound like a heavier version of Kozelek’s own obsessive tunes, with guitar notes repeating and steadily gaining in power. “Losing Streak” and the title track feature ominous grinds before giving way to the flowing melody of “Deflated,” a seven-minute track that opens up to unusual instrumental and harmonic beauty. “Morning Light” closes things with a violent instrumental undertow.

Great folow up to Infinity EP
Can Justin go wrong? This is a very solid effort from the Jesu project. Infinity seemed to try to go back to the old Godflesh sound of heavy riffs and paced but heavy drums. However he keeps the epic guitar effects and mixes what seems to be almost a perfect balance of the old and the new. Deflated and Morning Light in perticular. Morning Light I wish had more volcals though. I find myself replaying the first 2 minutes or so, because of it's haunting sound. He is definitely exploring the mixing of his vocals and melody. It reminds me of a heavier Ride and Slowdive. Justin Broadrick seems to always puts his best foot foward in his effort to explore his craft. He has an almost godlike ability to produce quantity with quality. It's been an effort in general to keep up with his work. I fully support his contributions to music and to the idea of creating and forming the sounds that give a full listening experience. Great album to add to your collection. So buy it man/woman!!!
Solid EP
After what I felt was a somewhat rambling release (Infinity) Opiate Sun brings us back to a more traditional Jesu sound and song structure. The relationship with Mark Kozelek's Caldo Verde ended up putting out a great short EP. That being said the songs on Opiate Sun are all quality Jesu, songs clocking in from a little over 5 minutes to just over 7 minutes in length. Losing Streak, Opiate Sun and Deflated all are prime examples of the now honed Jesu sound: A mix of Justins own genre defining metal, ambient, mixed with a heavy dose of catharsis for lyrical strength. Morning Light really shines (not trying to be litteral), starting with a more open intro and more lyrics than we're used to up front in a Jesu song. It picks up into a nice 'nodder' around the 2 minute mark; it's also the shortest offering on this EP. For an EP, this is more than a solid release, it leaves me wishing I had 2 or 3 more songs.
Art
This is my first Jesu album, and what an impression it gave me. Highly organic-sounding drums, devastating and beautiful riffs, and heartfelt singing. The chorus of Losing Streak is a stunner and the rest of the EP maintains a high quality. The vocals of Losing Streak, the riffs of the title track, and the sheer atmosphere of Deflated and Morning Light all become a powerful combination that lift you away from the world for almost half an hour. This musical high has a price though, and that is the exhaustion (and slight depression) you feel after full spins. Worth it though. Also, the slow tempos and repitition might not be for everyone, but I still highly reccomend this EP.
