iTunes Review
For a bunch of scary Swedes, Ghost’s debut album is quite catchy and melodic. The Stockholm sextet keep their identities shrouded in mystery — their lead singer praises Satan while dressed up like a satanic pope (replete with tall hat and skull make-up) as his band plays in brown hooded robes. “Deus Culpa” opens with church- organ drones before thunderous rhythms hail down over proto-metal riffs – but then this is all contrasted with some of the sunniest vocal harmonies since Blue Öyster Cult. The following “Ritual” contains a catchy melody that borders on guitar-pop akin to the Posies’ “I Can Dream All Day.” Although the slightly tougher sounding “Elizabeth” harkens to lighter moments of early Mercyful Fate, disciples of black metal may have a hard time digesting “Satan Prayer” which plays with such uplifting musicality that you can almost envision them singing, “Unholy ghost overlord and taker of life/ Hear our Satan prayer” with a smile on their faces.
Customer Reviews
Love it!
They're like the bastard children of old school Mercyful Fate and Blue Oyster Cult. You must have this album!
Victim of hype
Let me get this out of the way: "Opus Eponymous" is good. REALLY good. Its the kind of old school, analog-recorded, occult sex rock that would have horrified parents back in the 70s. The songs are tight, the vocals pristine (and refreshingly sensual for a release like this), and smooth, fuzzy riffs. But nothing can live up to the kind of hype this album got. Dawnbringer's "Nucleus" is better, and no one freaking knew it even came out. Don't get me wrong; you should buy this. Just be sure to temper your expectations a notch or so.
Dreadful
If this dreadful album consisting of what sounds like the lost soundtrack to 70's era Scooby-Doo cartoons is the metal album of the year then that reflects the bad taste of those reviewers making the selection and the overall dismal year for metal. What's number two, Steel Panther? Morbid Angel?
Better choices would have included, Leviathan, Disma, Opeth and for those with more mainstream tastes, Arch Enemy and maybe, maybe Amon Amarth.
Ghost - metal album of the year- WOW
