iTunes Review

As its cover art and album title suggest, Oranges and Lemons represents XTC's psychedelic vision, as much as such a concept could exist in 1989. The group had already issued several retro-psychedelic records as its alter-ego The Dukes of Stratosphear, emphasizing its ties to '60s pop. So it was hardly a stylistic shock when XTC extended these leanings to its proper group. In retrospect, it's less a shift than a rejuggling of the band's priorities. In the past, much of XTC's appeal had been its jarring rhythms and slashing guitars. Over the years, the band experimented with increasingly complex arrangements that shaded its songs in dramatic light. Though the group expressed displeasure with Todd Rundgren's production of 1986's Skylarking, that careful effort set the stage for this intricately sculpted collection. While "The Mayor of Simpleton" distills XTC's essence to its most mind-humming basics, the baroque, carnival-esque excitement of "King for a Day," "The Loving," "Merely a Man," and "Chalkhills and Children" make for smart and adventurous listening.

One of the Best!

One of the best, if not the best, albums by XTC and perhaps one of the best collections of songs, in my opinion, of all time. I couldn't agree more that this album is not only sonically rich with songs that are immaculately crafted, but also fills your head with layer upon incredible layer of musicianship; song writing that can align itself with the best that Lennon and McCartney had to offer and arrangements and instrumentation that supersede anyones imagination. Although 'Oranges and Lemons' is certainly an eclectic mix of songs, it is, indeed, that eclectricity, so to speak, that makes this album cohesive. Among the standouts are 'Garden of Earthly Delights,' with music that perfectly reflects its title, 'The Loving,' with its beautiful message that love is everything and 'Merely A Man,' a humorous take on 'love' alluding to 'Jesus, Buddha and The Wizard of Oz.' Perhaps my favorite selection is 'Cynical Days' written by Colin Moulding (whose songs on every XTC album are some of XTC's best work). In this work of art, Moulding waxes introspective on the important things in life, but still seems to hold out hope for the world. This tour de force will make the listener believe that there is still hope for the world even in this day and age.

Kings

I've never really paid much attention to these guys other than the casual hit. However King For A Day is easily their best single and one of the best from the 80s.

Wow factor

Did what amounts to a lyrical and sonic dissection of this album in The late eighties--verdict? Amazing!

Biography

Formed: 1976 in Wiltshire, England

Genre: Rock

Years Active: '70s, '80s, '90s, '00s

XTC was one of the smartest — and catchiest — British pop bands to emerge from the punk and new wave explosion of the late '70s. From the tense, jerky riffs of their early singles to the lushly arranged, meticulous pop of their later albums, XTC's music has always been driven by the hook-laden songwriting of guitarist Andy Partridge and bassist Colin Moulding. While popular success has eluded them in both Britain...
