iTunes Review

There are not enough adjectives in the English language to describe adequately the power and beauty of Angelique Kidjo's voice. Here are a few: Sweeping, soaring, shiny, gruff, pliant, honey sweet, tough enough to pierce steel. On Oremi ("Friends"), Kidjo uses her profound instrument to explore a fusing of music from African and its diasporas: a funky blend of dance grooves and reflective mid-tempo soul stirrers. But the bridges go beyond musical blends. A native of Benin, Kidjo tends to sing in Fon, her regional language, but here English blends in seamlessly on R&B chillout "Never Know" (featuring Cassandra Wilson) and the glittery trip-bop of "No Worry." The whole album shimmers with these lush textures, from the Branford Marsalis's rump shaking sax solo "Itche Koutche" to the sublime cover of Hendrix's "Voodoo Child (Slight Return)" to the South African background singers who appear on every track. Blending international concerns, multinational collaborations, and that voice, Kidjo has created something new and timeless.

One of my Favorites

I found this to be one of Angelique's best albums. Very powerful and soulful.

Mediocre offering from a usually brilliant artist

I adore Kidjo - her previous CD's were among my favorites of all time - vibrant, unique, melding diverse cultural rhythms and themes while still keeping her essential West African flair. This album, however, seems a too-obvious ploy to capture a Western audience. There are numerous songs in English, which is not bad in itself, except the lyrics are painfully trite. Much of what was elegant jazzy and bluesy strains has been replace by a funk sound that seems to have come striaght out of a bad 70's black sitcom. The album has a couple, and only a couple, highlights. Do buy her earlier work, Fifa, Aye, Logozo, for they are truly brilliant. This, however, is Kidjo light, less filling and less satisfying. I recently copied all my Kidjo CD's to iTunes; well almost all, I left this one on the shelf.

incredible

I saw her live opening up for Josh Groban on Feb. 24,2007 in Chicago, and damn, she demands such a presence on stage. Her voice is was absolutely stunning, it had so much emotion and passion in it, I had to wonder, " why havent i heard of her before? " And I'm a huge atreyu, sevendust, and other heavy rock and metal fan. And her music just captured me and sucked me in. Definately worth the buy, check out her other albums to!! 5 STARS!!!
