Album Review

With the departure of their founding vocalist — the heartwarmingly named Sauron — the remaining members of Polish death metal veterans Decapitated have apparently decided to mark the installment of his successor, Covan, with a wholesale change of direction for their fourth studio album, Organic Hallucinosis. Launching off of their new frontman's more versatile skills in delivering various stages of deathly grunting, the band has stepped up the complexity of their songwriting to match, while establishing a non-traditional death metal aesthetic somewhere between the lopsided time signatures of Meshuggah and down-tuned power grooves of Pantera. And even though the exceedingly challenging results don't usually make for ideal moshpit conditions, intellectual onslaughts like "A Poem About an Old Prison Man," "Day 69" and "Flash-B(l)ack," do promise hours of gradual interpretation for those inclined towards thinking man's extreme metal. They also lack nothing in terms of intensity or brutality, only rarely exposing even the remotest traces of melody (see "Invisible Control") or turning down the volume for haunting, quieter passages ("Visual Delusion"). All of these new developments undoubtedly constrict the potential audience for a sound that's already likely to polarize longtime Decapitated fans, never mind try to seduce new ones; but one can't fault the band for trying, since it's not like they've managed to break out of the death metal underground with their previous works, anyway. And by limiting this album's running time to less than half an hour, it's almost as if Decapitated are intentionally giving their fans with a quick and relatively painless introduction to both their new membership and ambitions. Seems like a good strategy, if it works out in the long run.

THE Death Metal Album of the year

I usually just write reviews on cdnow, but I felt compelled to be the first on iTunes to say that this Decapitated record is just astonishing. This is everything you could ever want in a death metal record. Granted, the new vocalist doesn't carry that "death metal growl" but the guy still has pipes. The production is top notch as well. The drums you have to hear to believe just gigantic the sound is.This album blows anything this band has done on the last few albums. The Negation just bored the crap out of me but this album is perfectly timed and perfectly executed. Play this a lot and play it loud!

Oh My Unholy God!

This album is flawless. Absolute brutality and technical prowress. In my opinion this is the greatest death metal album ever to be released, and that is coming from a major fan of death metal. First I would like to adress the production, which is absolutely amazing. I can't think of an album when there was'nt a time where i wanted to hear the drumming better, or the guitars, or the vocals. Never on this album, it's perfect. This is the best thing Earache has ever put out. Now to the band. They are some of the most talented musicians in metal today. Everything exectuted perfectly (live aswell). Odd time-signatures and keys, and these guys still manage to keep it brutal and beautiful to my unholy bleeding ears. In a nutshell, this is the best music I have ever heard, period. The new singer is awsome, just as good, if not better than Sauron. He has more range and variation. Buy this now, and feel blessed by the fact that you are hearing such a brutal masterpiece.

Different...

This album isn't bad, but it's definately not as good as their older stuff. The guitars, bass, and drums are fine, but they really lost something when Sauron left. Covan is an OK singer, but his ties to HxC are really obvious. If you're new to Decapitated, this shouldn't be your first buy. A better start would be Nihility or WIinds of Creation, which are masterpieces of Death Metal.

Biography

Genre: Rock

Years Active: '90s, '00s

Formed in 1996, when the average age of members Sauron (vocals), Vogg (guitar), Martin (bass), and Vitek (drums) was just 14, Decapitated have quickly gained recognition as one of Poland's, and even Europe's, finest exponents of ultra-technical death metal. These talents they perfected over the course of demos Cemeterial Gardens (1997) and The Eye of Horus (1998) before signing with Earache's Wicked World imprint for the release of their 2000 debut, Winds of Creation, which in turn led to a successful...
