The Most Underrated Album Of All Time.

Arguably, music has taken a turn for the worse in recent memory. Meaningful, well-written music has mostly stood aside while pointless, self-indulgent garbage constantly tops the charts at an alarming rate. So when I heard Muse's sophomore effort, Origin of Symmetry, I felt like my life was changed forever, because this is one of the best albums I've ever heard. Everything about it is astoundingly original (they don't sound like Radiohead at all) & ambitious; the sound effects the band incorperated into the songs are still light years ahead of our time, & it was released in 2001! In fact, the album was so unusual & innovative that Muse parted with Maverick Records, their record label at the time, because the label was afraid that the album's sound (particularly Matthew Bellamy's falsetto vocals) would discourage radio airplay in the United States. Sadly, this resulted in the album not being released in the U.S. until 2005, & it bombed anyways. This is sad, because more people should know about how awesome Origin of Symmetry is. New Born- From the first second of the album, you're disturbed by the haunting piano intro of this song. Yet, the song explodes into a hard rock anthem with distorted guitars & multi-layered sound effects swirling behind Matthew's soaring vocals. This song sets the perfect tone for the rest of the album, & it will have you instantly captivated. 10/10 Bliss- Although it's a love song, you'd never expect the beautiful lyrics to be backed by a swirling piano track or banging drums & guitars. This isn't at all a bad thing, however, because it never sounds cheesy or uninspired, which is surprising considering that it's a ballad. 10/10 Space Dementia- This is the scariest song I've ever heard in my life. It sounds peaceful enough at the beginning, but it quickly transforms into chaos. After several minutes of loudness & disturbingly dark lyrics, it just dissolves into hell, with 2 minutes of sound effects crashing all over the place & Satan's orchestra playing in tune (if there is any). But just when it's almost too much to take, it abruptly ends. It's brilliant, amazing, & f*#%ed up beyond all belief. 10/10 Hyper Music- This song defines hard rock. It begins with microphone feedback, followed by a highly distorted guitar being played & loud instruments joining in. Matthew screams his heart out & sings really hateful lyrics while this all happens, & it all melts into an awesong song that all rock music fans will head-bang to. 10/10 Plug In Baby- Widely recognized for its incredible guitar riff, this is obviously one of Muse's most famous & innovative songs. It was also their most successful song at the time, & it's easy to see why, because it perfectly displays Matthew Bellamy's revolutionary guitar playing & musical genius. 10/10 Citizen Erased- This is arguably the best Muse song ever. Everything about it simply triumphs in a way even better than the rest of the band's work. When I first heard the song, it was simply mind-blowing, especially the awesome sound effects near the ending, & I don't think anyone else can craft anything as ingenious & grandiose as this, not even Muse themselves. 20/10 Micro Cuts- Any fan of lame modern music would swear that Matthew has A.D.D. after hearing this song. Seriously, it's pure insanity, & nothing about it is the least bit regular or on the standard wavelength of rock music. In fact, you can't & probably won't ever hear anything like it, which is unfortunate. 10/10 Screenager- The same can be said for this song, which, although not throbbing with loudness, is just as bizarre. To say the least, it's interesting. To say the most, it's surprisingly captivating & completely irregular. 10/10 Darkshines- One of the catchiest songs on the album. By this point, you'll realize that the album will simply refuse to let up on its overall weirdness or greatness, & the song's crashing pianos & demented vocals will prove so. 10/10 Feeling Good- Muse's only officially released cover song as of now, this song gave an old classic a well-realized rock facelift, and it sounds just as good as what any Muse fan would expect from them. 10/10 Futurism- Dark & disturbing, this is the perfect "movie villain" song.The song was initially never released in the U.K. or the U.S. because the bass riff was too hard to recreate in live performances. It's a shame, because it's great & highly original. 10/10 Megalomania- Only Muse would be brilliant enough to combine a pipe organ with soaring falsetto vocals. The song's epic closing note leaves you standing in pure amazement, & it sums up everything the album accomplished in 1 haunting finale. 10/10 Extremely well-realized & perfectly defined, Origin of Symmetry is easily Muse's magnum opus. From New Born to Megalomania, it destroyed all the boundaries of musical creativity I thought were firmly placed. It's sad to know that it hardly sold at all in the U.S. until the band's later works became well-known there. However, Absolution is definitely inferior & Black Holes & Revelations also failed to match it. And how ironic, because for an early effort by Muse, this simply belw me away with its presentaion, sound effects, & music. It's hard to find any recent album as daunting & ingenious as Origin of Symmetry.

is awful, and I'm still at a loss from trying to understand what the reviewer was saying. However, don't listen to the nutcase; and if you enjoy creative, intriguing music that keeps you on your toes, then purchase this album.

my favorite album

So few people discover this album, it amazes me. They're mostly interested in the songs that are overplayed on the radio, and fail to explore some of Muse's other brilliant works. Not that I'm saying those songs aren't fantastic, but it saddens me how undiscovered their other music passes by. This whole album is absolutely insane, with its raw sound that will pound inside you and make you want to scream out with agonizing pleasure. :) Buy it, you'll become a Muse addict.
