Album Review

Although Shadow Project's self-titled debut album isn't goth rock per se, the CD attracted some attention in goth circles — and it isn't hard to understand why. All of the adjectives that are typically used to describe goth rock — dark, shadowy, gloomy, moody — describe this 1991 release. And while Shadow Project's alternative rock isn't really goth, it does contain elements of the style. But this L.A. band won't be mistaken for Bauhaus or the Sisters of Mercy; rather, you can think of its music as a risk-taking, daring blend of goth, punk, the Stranglers, Roxy Music, and David Bowie. Shadow Project's influences are far-reaching, and the Angelinos use all them to create a challenging sound of their own. This CD doesn't go out of its way to be accessible; although generally melodic, Shadow Project can be dissonant and abstract — and its debut album won't necessarily win you over with the first listen. They don't always go for immediacy or try to give listeners the quick fix, but the more you listen to eerie gems like "Holy Hell," "The Other Flesh," and "Death Plays Its Role," the more Shadow Project's first album grows on you. Some listeners may fall in love with the disc the first time they hear it; others, however, may need to play it several times before realizing just how promising and substantial it is. Ultimately, the more adventurous and patient listeners are the ones who will get the most out of Shadow Project's impressive debut album.

Remarkable but Questionable Re-Release

After Christian Death, there was Shadow Project - the brainchild of Rozz Williams and Eva O. With Rozz providing theatrical, haunting David-Bowiesque vocals and Eva supplying otherworldly guitar riffs, Shadow Project makes their debut. Yet while this particular release seems to have completely re-mastered tracks (the more well known self-titled release was nowhere near as clearly mixed), I cannot find it on Amazon.com or anywhere else. The Shadow Project CD has 12 songs - this has 6 (which is self explanatory considering the fact that this claims to be an original EP). 'When the Heart Breaks' cannot be found on the 12-track Shadow Project CD, but it is the first song here. This may prove a necessary purchase for Rozz fans everywhere, but personally, I'll be waiting for the more well known studio releases ('Shadow Project', 'Dreams for the Dying', and 'From the Heart'). Suggested iTunes purchases for those interested in this album: -Only Theatre of Pain (Christian Death) -Ashes (Christian Death) -The Path of Sorrows (Christian Death)

The demos come to life!

I first heard these as "demos" back around 1990 and really enjoyed them, so I'm happy to see them here. Honestly, I prefer these versions to the ones on the debut CD (sorry, Paris, but I really don't like most of the keyboard treatments you added). On a side note, "When the Heart Breaks" is available on "In Tuned Out Live 93," but having the studio version is nice.

left out their best song

I was very disappointed to see that they left out what I consider to be Shadow Project's BEST song:"Under Your Wing", which is the first track on the band's self-titled debut album. Fortunately the original album is stil available from sources on the internet. Otherwise this album is a must for collectors of Christian Death and Rozz Williams' music, a truly fun and hard-rocking goth album!

Biography

Genre: Rock

Years Active: '90s

The most prolific of Rozz Williams' post-Christian Death side projects, Shadow Project also most closely resembled the work that made Williams a goth icon, though it incorporated bits of his punk, glam, and experimental influences to a slightly greater degree. Centered around Williams and his wife Eva O., Shadow Project grew to share some of the supporting personnel from the alternate version of Christian Death, which Williams revived concurrently beginning in the late '80s. After leaving the original...
