iTunes Review

The members of Other Lives originally came together in 2004 as an instrumentals only project called Kunek, and while they’ve added vocals this time around, a cinematic and orchestral approach still infuses their music. The thoughtful and poetic lyrics and plaintive voice of Jesse Tabish fit perfectly with the gorgeous arrangements and delicate dynamics of these weighty songs. The talented quintet creates a sound that is symphonic and lush, with arpeggiated piano notes meshing with moaning cello to create a palpable feeling of melancholy that dominates. Guitars, mandolin, and some brass and reeds play subtle yet key roles as well, and the excellent drumming guides the songs along as on the mini epic “End of the Year,” a high point of the recording. The tempos are consistently slow and the melodies dark and forlorn, yet there’s a slow burn that makes the album dramatic and compelling without slipping into the mire. Fans of the Decemberists, Sufjan Stevens, and Belle and Sebastian would do well to check out this impressive debut.

Atmospheric, melodic and beautiful

I've been waiting for this release for over a year now as I first heard of Other Lives while they were called "Kunek" and released "Flight of the Flynns", which is also a great album, definately check it out!!!! Anyway, this album is AMAZING!!! It's a bit mellower than their first release but the atmosphere the cd creates is absolutely beautiful, even meloncholy and as far as song writing and song structure goes, the band has grown alot since their first release. The cd is also amazing as far as dynamics go!! The piano and cello have stepped up but have not taken over the songs or the mixes and this gives "Other Lives" a truely band oriented feel. After my first listen I was hooked and I'm 100% positive that after repeated listenings it will grow on the listener as there are lots of little subtile textures happening throughout the songs. Lyrically, the words are perfect for the tone of the songs and the fact that each song has so much melodic depth both lyrically and instrumentally, it makes this one of the best releases of 2009. The musical growth and maturity are evident on every track and that's a rarity for many modern bands, so do yourself a favor and buy this cd. I haven't seen them live yet but I'm anxious to do so. Stand out tracks, End of the Year, It was the night, Paper Cities. This cd is a must have for anyone who loves music!

Amazing Debut

This is a must listen for fans of Fleet Foxes, The Beatles, or good music in general.
