Album Review

Brandon Fields, whose main influence is David Sanborn, has proved many times that he can play creative R&B-influenced jazz. This CD has a few such moments (particularly during a heated "The Face on Mars" and an all-too-brief "You Got It") but Phil Perry's Al Jarreau soundalike pop vocals on "Know How" and "Old San Juan" lower the jazz content of the disappointingly routine (and out-of-print) CD.

Alto version of Michael Brecker...

I remember going to see Brandon at the Baked Potato (a famous jazz club in Studio City, CA) sitting in with all kinds of bands. Steve Lukather's, David Garfield's, Karizma, Michael Landau's, Larry Carlton's, etc. and of course his own. I always thought of him as a west-coast, alto-playing version of Michael Brecker. He just didn't have the typical "west coast" sax sound (i.e; Ernie Watts, Jeff Kashiwa, Eric Marienthal, Marc Russo, Tom Scott, Richard Elliot, Steve Tavaglione to name a few). He had a far more "east coast" attitude when soloing. Way more "out there" especially "live". Even in his songwriting, it was different and it didn't help his CD sales because he never really got exposed to the masses (east coast). Great player on all his recordings. Producers always envision an R&B/Jazz artist crossing over with a hit (alå George Benson or Al Jarreau) with vocals on smooth jazz music but it's rare when it happens...

All of Brandon Fields CD's are great. Can't miss with any of them if you're a fan of great musicianship and contemporary jazz...
