iTunes Review

Lubbock, Texas-styled singer/songwriter Rick Buckner likely feels he spilled a fair amount of his own blood in making this anticipated follow-up to 2006’s Meadow. A number of unfortunate events held up the release, among them a failed tape machine, a murder, and a theft (laptop mixes). After all that, "Voila! The record was done, or, let us be clear, abandoned like the charred shell of a car with a nice stereo," Buckner declared. But Our Blood feels more like a labor of love, a meticulously crafted collection that rivals his best work. The opening moments of the record, a few seconds that sound like rusted steel exhaling, gives way to a solid, alt-country tune (“Traitor”), built on a chiming acoustic guitar, murmuring vintage keyboards and a gently roiling pedal steel (by veteran player Buddy Cage). Buckner’s voice sounds stronger than ever, a little Bondo filling in the weaker spots and a smoothing chamois treatment over the rougher ones. The layers of old Wurlitzers, Casios, pedal steel and E-bow weave an incredibly rich texture. Buckner says Our Blood is about “being caught,” and his splendid lyrical storytelling is as mesmerizing as the music.

Worth the wait

It's shocking to me that I'm the first reviewer of Mr. Buckner's new album. He is truly one of the great American songwriters. I met Richard right before he went on stage at The Bowery Ballroom back several months ago. Fantastic set. I've waited a long time for this album and, not surprisingly, it measures up to any of his past recordings. His music is so complex, both in arrangement and lyric, but delivered with such simple elegance. A true craftsman. If you are not familiar with Richard Buckner's work, this is as good of a place as any to start. I think you'll find his music addictive.

Tough to beat Devotion & Doubt

Devotion & Doubt is one of the favorite albums of all time. Our Blood comes closer in style and quality than anything since, with subject matter that is a bit different. Great album, which I am glad is not just like D&D, but a more matured Buckner.

Awkward beauty, incredibly intelligent

I am NEVER bored with Richard Buckner! His music seems beautifully awkward and moody. His vocals and writing set him apart as a true original artist, exploring where most artist fear to tread...or better yet, can't. Thank God the music industry has morphed into a true free market where artist like Buckner can thrive and be heard. What do I especially like? "Hindsight", "Traitor", "Thief", "Witness" and "Ponder".

Biography

Born: 1967 in San Francisco, CA

Genre: Singer/Songwriter

Years Active: '90s, '00s, '10s

This husky-voiced country-folk singer/songwriter is very much in the mold of the Lubbock, Texas, school of mavericks, including Butch Hancock, Terry Allen, and Jimmie Dale Gilmore. Richard Buckner is actually based in San Francisco, but the Lubbock connection is no accident. His debut album, Bloomed, was recorded in Lubbock, for one thing, with producer Lloyd Maines, who has also worked with Hancock, Allen, Joe Ely, and Uncle Tupelo. Maines himself plays several instruments on the...
