Album Review
Lali Puna's previous album, Faking the Books, was a drastic change for a previously subdued group. Most of its songs featured electric guitars in a prominent role. Some of them, at various points, were loud. On Our Inventions, following a break of six years, guitars go back to supplying texture, while programmed rhythms and synthesizers, with delicately struck vibraphones, rule the album’s makeup. Not one of the songs is louder than a lullaby, the ideal setting for Valerie Trebeljahr's vague, charmingly awkward, and clipped lyrics and whispered vocals. There are no real standouts, no (relatively) big hooks as heard on Scary World Theory's "Lowdown"; instead, there is a steady stream of hushed electronic pop songs that is as easy to enjoy as it is to ignore — and be struck with the thought that, at some point, your mood lifted a bit. On the closing “Out There,” Trebeljahr is joined by Yellow Magic Orchestra's Yukiro Takahashi, and the two voices complement one another with such sweetness that a full album of duets sounds like the best next step for both of them.
Customer Reviews
Beautiful.
I'm sort of new to Lali Puna. I had downloaded a few songs back in 2007 or so but I never got into them too much, since I was just finding out about what other kinds of music genres I enjoyed. It just so happened that Lali Puna finally had caught my attention randomly & I'm glad it happened. They're an exceptional band, definitely not like other bands I'm familiar with. They're soft, but with a hard hit of emotions and visuals through their soundscape-like music.
This album is refreshing, beautiful, emotional, clean cut, and most importantly, original. I would highly recommend buying this album. You won't regret it!
FINALLY!
Definitely worth the wait, Its been about 5 years since the group's released anything.
Album highlights are Remember, Everything is always, Our Inventions and Move one, Not to mention Out there Featuring Yukihiro Takahashi Of the Yellow Magic Orchestra.
I can wait for other 5 years if they are going to make another great album like this!
And now I just wait to catch them live - if I don't see them live before summertime, I'm sure I'll catch up with them when they'll be headlining (and rocking) at various summer festivals this years! Buy the album straight away, you won't regret it!
