iTunes Review

Port O’Brien’s breakup was a bummer, especially for those of us too impatient for the inevitable reunion. But it’s sure good to know that frontman Van Pierszalowski likes to rock. Out in the Light is quite a departure from Port O’Brien’s hushed restraint. “For the One” opens with huge distorted guitar riffs, overdriven vocals, and a meat-and-potatoes rhythm section that sounds like Pierszalowski hired Northwestern lumberjacks to play bass and drums. But his knack for crafting catchy, triumphant melodies is intact, and it’s strengthened by a newfound confidence in his vocals and a bottomless depth to his lyrics. In “O Holy Break of Day,” he seems fine with the change as he croons, "Never having imagined I could have been a free man this soon.” Even quieter songs like the title track play with a fearless attack that his old band couldn’t pull off. “San Francisco” and “Mickey Mantle” close with a love for the Barbary Coast and a yearning for immortality.

Buy It!

I saw WATERS at the Hi-Dive in Denver. I was blown away. Do yourself a favor and buy this album! Even if you aren't immediately grabbed by a couple of the songs on the album, I guarantee you will be after a couple of listens. One of the best indie releases IMO in 2011.

Great album, lucky to find

Really unexpected. Downloaded the single, liked it so much I went for the whole album. Great songs, interesting sound, simple yet intriguing lyrics. I would buy again.

good discovery

Love these guys. No idea who there are, where they come from. But on the recommendation of a "best unknown albums of '11" review, I checked them out. The first two cuts are the best, but give the other ones time. They seriously rock, in the vein of Neil Young's Mirrorball--hooks and distortion like crazy. Huge bass presence. Great slow buildup guitar crashes. I'm a picky rock listener and these guys harken back to why I've liked guitar rock since I was a kid in the 70s. They're old fashioned, but post-punk. The rest of the album (track 3 and beyond) are a little less intense, but definitely tuneful and grew on me to the point that I've almost listened this album to death already. Worth the $8? Are you kidding? Get it. Just the line (and the song) "O Holy Break of Day" is worth the price alone.
