Album Review

Out of the Shadow by Rogue Wave is one of the better records to completely slip under the radar in 2003. The band is mostly the product of Zach Rogue's low-key brilliance as he writes, sings, and plays everything except for drums and the occasional guitar part. Zach has a great voice with the range to reach some very high and pretty notes. He also has an ear for arrangement and a knack for hooky songwriting. The sound of the record is pitched somewhere between Elephant 6 (without the icky whimsy) and the Northwest gloomcore merchants like Built to Spill or Death Cab for Cutie (without the gloom), with a little bit of classic Baroque folk (Simon & Garfunkel) on the fringes. The songs are split between full-band songs like the charging "Every Moment," the strutting Kinks-flavored "Seasick on Land," or the tough "Endless Shovel" and solo acoustic-based tracks like the bubble-sweet "Be Kind & Remind," the lap steel melancholic "Postage Stamp World," or the very Simon-esque "Man-Revolutionary!." Not a weak link or bit of filler to be found anywhere, either. "Out of the Shadows" is an indie dream come true. A dream like another great Elliott Smith record, or a Sebadoh record that isn't an embarrassment, or a Neutral Milk Hotel record that makes sense. You get the picture. Thanks to Sub Pop for the reissue and for rescuing this gem from the obscurity of microindie wasteland.

If music is my lover...

Once in a while, an absolutely amazing group like Rogue Wave comes along. And unfortunately, hardly anyone has heard of them. Rogue Wave's debut album took me a couple months to get into, but then I was hooked on their gorgeous melodic pop. Their work is stunning, and places itself at the top of my collection. I love all the songs on this album, especially "Falcon Settles Me" and "Postage Stamp World." I also recommend seeing them live, because their music actually drove me to tears. I don't relate them to the Shins, because Rogue Wave's unique sound is much better. Man-Revolutionary! is obviously Simon and Garfunkle influenced. Zach's vocals and lyrics are equally breathtaking, and I love the dreamy electro pop and acoustic guitars with a catchy folk side. You really should buy this album, along with Descended Like Vultures.

Rogue Wave rocks

I love this album. I discovered this band on itunes just recently. These days there are so many bands that sound the same. Rouge Wave on the other hand is a breath of fresh air. The previews for the songs dont do them justice. Most of the songs are not repetitive and actualy build to something. I think the albums stand out song is "Kicking the Heart Out". If there is one complaint I have about Rogue Wave is that there sound often hase too much of a Simon and Garfunkle vibe for my taste. Also check out there latest album "Descended Like Vultures."

Really F'ing good

The first Rogue Wave i heard was the free download of kicking the heart out a while back and that same day i convinced my parents to take me down the amoeba music store which happens to be a very far drive. Zach Rogue is even better live than the album and usually its the other way around. If you like the Shins or any other type of music, get this album and buy the new one Decended Like Vultures on October 25!

Biography

Formed: 2002 in Bay Area, CA

Genre: Alternative

Years Active: '00s, '10s

Rogue Wave formed in 2002 when a newly-unemployed Zach Rogue left his San Francisco home, visited friends in New York City, and returned to California with nearly a full album's worth of textured, cerebral indie pop. Rogue then quit his post in his previous group, the Desoto Reds, and finished the album, which was released on Rogue's own Responsive label under the title Out of the Shadow. As he was completing the record, Rogue decided to form a band in order to perform the material live, and he soon...
