Customer Reviews

Acoustic jazz at its best.

This album came out during the fusion period and it was a revelation. Transcendent, folky, funky, it has that purity of improvisational spirit that is hypnotic. Call it jazz or modern classical or the roots of, dare I say, "smooth jazz". What ever it is, this is good music and these guys are virtuosos. I consider this a classic recording. It was a pleasant break from the electricity of Chick Corea, Weather Report and disco. Very nice.

Oregon at its best

Very little words can qualify or quantify the beauty exuded from this album. This album is more like an impressionistic Jazz album in that it's as if you took some of the best Jazz musicians and planted them in a forest for days, then had them record right out there in the woods near a brook or on top of a mountain. The sound would compare to what's on this album. I wish there were more groups like Oregon because their music is a rare form of pan-ethnic, pan-genre, a kaleidescopic integration of intuitive ideas that is such a precious gem in the world of Jazz.

Beautiful Improvised Music

The sounds on this album are really unique - somewhere between acoustic jazz and classical, but really neither genre can encapsulate what these guys are doing. Ralph Towner's compositions, Paul McCandless's woodwinds, and the cohesiveness of the group are all highlights. Check this out.

From the beginning, the band eschewed most jazz conventions. Percussionist Collin Walcott played tabla, sitar, and dulcimer, among other instruments, but did not use a trap set; bassist Glen Moore doubled on clarinet, viola, and piano, and its front line was formed by a double-reedist (Paul McCandless) and an acoustic guitarist...
