iTunes Review
Released in 1991 as the alternative music scene was securely scoring mainstream commercial success with sounds that were both steeped in rock tradition and enriched by recent pop music accents, Out of Time is among R.E.M.’s most vibrant albums and contains several of its finest songs, from the well-known hit single “Losing My Religion” to the subtle shades of the obscure album cut “Country Feedback.” Michael Stipe’s voice is brought further up in the mix, with indisputable clarity replacing what was once a hushed mumble, but it’s the instrumentation that dominates the soundscreen, from the chiming mandolins to the trilling harpsichords and organs floating throughout. This is ‘80s college rock expanding into the new decade with an excited experimentalism. The B-52’s Kate Pierson strongly steers the sublime hit single “Shiny Happy People,” and turns in a credible country duet for “Me In Honey.” KRS-One’s guest appearance on “Radio Song” sparks the band to jam out, while string arrangements add depth and glamour to “Low” and “Near Wild Heaven.” A career high-point.

One of REM's Best Albums
Creatively different from great IRS Years... Out of Time shows a diversity in writing that can hold both somber and cheerful tracks together on a single album. This album shows REM risk taking... Losing my religion (almost all mandolin), a thumbing of the nose to the critics with Shiny Happy People (overly cheerful lyrics and music with Happy Kate Peirson- B-52's) in response to comments about political and typical somber writings of Michael and Co of past albums. There is also an expansion of sound Radio Song, Near Wild Heaven, and the glorious Texarkana. The later is one of REM's lesser known jewels. Really a solid album... Favorites: Texarkana, Me In Honey, Near Wild Heaven, Endgame, Shiny Happy People, and Losing my Religion, and most of the rest of the album.
A Diverse and Excellent Album.
While I tend to prefer the loud, ringing guitars on earlier works in the IRS years, this album is unique in that it shows just how diverse R.E.M. can be, from the heartbreaking "Half A World Away" to the downright fun and cheerfully upbeat "Shiny Happy People". A very acoustic and mandolin filled record. It was a risk obviously worth taking, for "Losing My Religion" turned out to be one of R.E.M.'s biggest hits. Other gems would be "Radio Song", "Texarkana", "Near Wild Heaven", and "Country Feedback".
Wow
I cant believe im the first to write a review on this amazing album. REM's sound was so original in alternative music at a time where grunge dominated. Some of REM's best song on on this disc and its a classic.
