Album Review

Paul van Dyk, Germany's most prominent trance producer at the turn of the century, edged forward creatively on his third studio album, Out There and Back. Whereas his past two albums, 45 RPM (1994) and Seven Ways (1996), were fairly straight-ahead affairs similar in approach to a trance DJ mix dotted with anthemic moments such as "For an Angel" and "Forbidden Fruit," this third album is more eclectic, with distinctive songs and a greater emphasis on vocals. In fact, those listeners with an affection for mid-'90s trance might be disappointed by the eclecticism on display here. "Another Way" is an early highlight, sequenced as the third track. The one-two punch of "Avenue" and "Tell Me Why (The Riddle)" a couple tracks later stands out as the album centerpiece. As with most albums of this type, Out There and Back drags a little toward the end, but everything considered, this is still a more well-rounded and thus engaging album than van Dyk's previous two and, certainly, most others in the trance bin.

Customer Reviews

One of the greatest trance productions of all time.

I bought this album in college at the suggestion of a friend and was completely blown away. That was in 2000, and I still listen to this album regularly to this day. If I had to chose 3 albums to listen to the rest of my life, this would be one of them. I'm an avid PVD fan, and while he has had many great productions over the years, I would have to say this would be the pinnacle of his work. He still puts out good tracks here and there, but nothing like this. This album is amazing, and every track on it is great. If you are on the fence for some reason, just buy it! You'll be glad you did.

Finest Trance "Album" I've Ever Heard

Trance artists usually don't focus on whole albums, and I don't even know if PVD himself does anymore. I know that BT, Tiesto and a few others still do, and this is not to knock them or others, as I haven't heard most of their catalogs. However, that being said, I considered this to be one of my ten favorite albums of the first decade of the new millenium, it's the only electronic album I've ever given a high rating to, and this is the only electronic album I recommend to others. I consider this just a great album, regardless of what kind of music it is.

I consider the real "album" to end with the third song on CD2, Namistai (one of the great trance jams of all time, IMO). The rest of the tracks, while good on their own, are alternate versions or different mixes of songs that already appeared on the album.

The levels of energy that PVD generates on this album are heights that, IMO, he has never again reached or surpassed. Another Way, Traveling, Avenue, Tell Me Why, Together We Will Conquer, Face to Face, The Love From Above and Columbia are an unbelievable sequence of songs that create an incredible flow of positive energy.

Great stuff, I highly recommend it.

One of the very best trance albums

This is a remarkable work, virtually flawless from start to finish. It is arguably his finest work, but I still prefer "Reflections."

From early Berlin techno and house through to progressive trance, producer/DJ Paul van Dyk has soundtracked the German electronic dance scene ever since he moved to the city and began mixing in 1988. A native of a German town near Frankfurt, van Dyk first heard house music on the radio during the mid-'80s. Soon he was experimenting with a rudimentary turntable setup, and after hitting Berlin, he gigged around the city. By 1991, he had appeared at the legendary Tresor club; he later set up his own...
