iTunes Review

Released in 1991 as the alternative music scene was securely scoring mainstream commercial success with sounds that were both steeped in rock tradition and enriched by recent pop music accents, Out of Time is among R.E.M.’s most vibrant albums and contains several of its finest songs, from the well-known hit single “Losing My Religion” to the subtle shades of the obscure album cut “Country Feedback.” Michael Stipe’s voice is brought further up in the mix, with indisputable clarity replacing what was once a hushed mumble, but it’s the instrumentation that dominates the soundscreen, from the chiming mandolins to the trilling harpsichords and organs floating throughout. This is ‘80s college rock expanding into the new decade with an excited experimentalism. The B-52’s Kate Pierson strongly steers the sublime hit single “Shiny Happy People,” and turns in a credible country duet for “Me In Honey.” KRS-One’s guest appearance on “Radio Song” sparks the band to jam out, while string arrangements add depth and glamour to “Low” and “Near Wild Heaven.” A career high-point.

Texarkana is an unknown awesome song that everyone should get to know. It should not have taken me nearly 20 years to find it. Notice in the song that "Texarkana" is never mentioned.

1991 was famous for being the year alternative rock went mainstream with the success of Seattle based "grunge" bands like Nirvana and Pearl Jam. But the greatest success of all this year was ironically released by the band that had been doing it longer than anybody else - R.E.M. When R.E.M. first presented Warner Bros., their record company, with "Out of Time", the album that would be the one to launch them into stardom, their immediate reaction was: "You mean you want the one with the mandolin to be the lead single?" However, it was "the one with the mandolin" that became R.E.M.'s biggest hit ever, before or since - "Losing My Religion". But "Losing My Religion" is only the beginning. Like any good R.E.M. record, the best songs are often the ones nobody's heard. "Country Feedback" is, in my opinion, the single greatest R.E.M. song ever recorded, or at least one of them. Sure, many fans dislike "Out of Time" because they claim it was when the band "sold out". Peter Buck's response to these claims is "Name the last time you heard a hit single that's lead instrument was the mandolin." And yes, "Shiny Happy People" is not a highlight in R.E.M.'s catalouge. Every time I hear it on the radio it frustrates me because this is the song that's getting all the airplay, when songs like "Country Feedback" are so much better. Sure, "Out of Time" isn't perfect, and is a far cry from the best album in the long R.E.M. catalouge, but in almost any other band's catalouge, it would be. But it was the turning point in the band's career in that it turned them from underground rockers into one of the biggest bands in the world. And for that, "Out of Time" deserves a lot of respect.
Key Tracks: "Losing My Religion", "Low", "Half a World Away", "Country Feedback"

Who knew it would take 18 years before I would own the album? I have to say that I was very impressed and wish I could have bought it way back! Shiny Happy People being my favorite track. The whole album just flows from one track into the next. I love it. This is the only REM cd I really need.

R.E.M. mark the point when post-punk turned into alternative rock. When their first single, "Radio Free Europe," was released in 1981, it sparked a back-to-the-garage movement in the American underground. While there were a number of hardcore and punk bands in the U.S. during the early '80s, R.E.M. brought...
