Album Review

Coalesce fans have been waiting long and hard for the emergence of the band's fourth full-length overall, 2009's Ox. After all, it was nearly an entire decade since the last full-length offering from the band, 0:12 Revolution in Just Listening, appeared. But here the lads are once more, with all the complicated metal by way of hardcore than the listener can handle...before the average person's brain overloads and explodes. And Ox won't disappoint longtime Coalesce supporters, as there's simply oodles of screaming, riffing, and brutal beats, especially on such eardrum rupturing ditties as the album opener, "The Plot Against My Love," "The Villain We Won't Deny," and "The Purveyor of Novelty and Nonsense." If it's challenging extreme metal you want, it's challenging extreme metal you'll get throughout Ox.

Customer Reviews

Behold the strength of OX....

How can a band over the years dial down the gain on the guitar and still get heavier and heavier??? Coalesce does it. This is not an album where you are going to hear the scooped out mid-EQ Ibanez guitars and "breakdowns" for pissed off teenagers to karate kick out of sync with. This is and adult record. Get drunk and be happy that you don't live with your parents... Yeah, you can do that to this record. Or wake up on the way to your job with this turned WAY up. You feel OX in your sack, and reminds you of what makes you a man. This is one hell of a mature record, and on par with everything Coalesce has released in the past. Not to disappoint. Is is possible? Yes it is and you have it all in OX and more. 14 tracks of the record of the year...

flawless.

10 years after there last album, Coalesce is still untouchable. No other band should even attempt this style of music, based solely on the fact that Coalesce cant be touched.

Could be metal album of the year

If all the metal publications still remember who they are. The album is punchy, and unique for this time. And it's been 10 years since their last release. I'd say the break paid off, but they have always been incredible. I have to wait until Converge's new album is out, but this definitely has my nod for a possible best metal album of 2009.

Biography

Formed: Kansas City, MO

Genre: Rock

Years Active: '90s, '00s

Coalesce's music has consistently pushed the boundaries of the hardcore and metal genres, forging a mind-boggling obsession with strange, shifting tempos with power, noise, groove, and a creativity paralleled only by the band's peers in Dillinger Escape Plan and Botch. The origins of Coalesce can be traced back to a band called Breach — a group not to be confused with the European outfit that shares their name. Breach formed in January of 1994 with Jes Steineger on guitar, Stacy Hilt on bass,...
