iTunes Review

Before they pushed their songs into the realm of endless drone, the Melvins created vignettes of brutality with Ozma, their second LP. Among the album’s 16 tracks, only two surpass the three-minute mark, and many clock in at less than two minutes. It’s an unusual but refreshing approach to heavy rock music, which usually demands plenty of space to deliver its impact. The short songs on Ozma only seem to gain power from their limited duration. Each song turns into a micro-study of the riff — demolition in miniature. While the band won respect for its relentless low-tuned, distorted riffs, Ozma proves that the Melvins’ greatest strength is their rhythmic ingenuity. Where most bands settle into a riff with total complacency, the Melvins always take an unexpected turn. As soon as they have you settled, they’ll jerk you in the opposite direction. While it is impossible to ignore the exhaust hit created by guitarist Buzz Osbourne and bassist Lori Black, Ozma belongs to drummer Dale Crover. Like a mutant version of John Bonham, his brickbat rhythms explode like land mines throughout these performances.

Customer Reviews

super thick weirdness

This album changed how I viewed "heavy" music, and I haven't looked back since. Thank you, Melvins.

Melvins rule!

ENOUGH with the Cobain stuff. Yes, he was once somehow involved with them, but please, if you listen to great underrated bands like The Melvins only because of Mr "God Grunge" Cobain, then you are no fan. Melvins had a big part in influencing grunge, but just stop with him. He was a great artist, but not that original and wasn't the best from that genre. But anyway, if you want real metal music with a hardcore punk vibe, then this is for you. The Melvins have never dissapointed. This is loud, heavy, doomy, sludgy and complete awesomeness! Thank god for Black Flag going metal with My War.

Strange Perfection

This album is unbelievable, Deffinately an aquired taste, but still Great, it's a shame this album was kinda glanced over.

The Melvins were the first post-punk band to revel in the slow, sludgy sounds of Black Sabbath. Their music is oppressively slow and heavy, only without any of the silly mystical lyrics or the indulgent guitar solos; it's just one massive, oozing pile of dark slime. The Melvins' first record was released in 1987; they've released many albums since then, but it wasn't until 1993 that they went to a major label, thanks to their protégé, Kurt Cobain....
