iTunes Review

Just when it seems that the concept of an indie-rock-oriented act having more experimental, electronic and hip-hop contemporaries remix their material is as played out as it possibly can be, the Seattle-based Minus the Bear flips the script with Interpretaciones del Oso. From the ambient, washed-out, rap-singing approach of Fog to Plan B's beat-driven apocalypse, this is the increasingly rare remix record that stands on its own as a lovely bit of collaboration. The award for standout track goes to O, Hunter's remarkable and beautifully layered remix of "The Pig War." The best remixes are entirely new songs with just a fading memory of the old number, and this song, by Morgan from the Blood Brothers, fits the bill perfectly.

Mejor que Menos!

This was the first album I downloaded from Minus the Bear and it still holds a place on my iPod. Nervous, edgy, and beat-tastic phrasing emanate from the dark corners of this disc and slowly let the light in, ray by blinding ray. Memphis and 53rd, The Fix, and The Game Needed Me are well thought out glints of sadness and sweet, shredding the edge between the two. O, Hunter and Michio's Death Drive take me to an ephemeral dream field where everything is not quite in focus, but exceptionally sharp. The whole concept of remix I have always enjoyed. There is nothing darker than one's own self-reflection, and then producing something wholly aberrant from the idea's birth.
