The next step...

If you are reading this, chances are you are already a Sonata Arctica fan...and S.A. fans are serious about the music they love. This single is just a simple, three song appetizer, served up just about a month before S.A.'s new CD, Unia, hits stores. How does it stack up to the bands already excellent catalogue? Pretty well...but the band's change in sound won't please everyone. Paid In Full, the first single off Unia, is showcased here. Both the radio version and the album version are available on this single, but admittedly, the differences between the two are barely noticable. The third song is a cover of Gary Moore's "Out In The Fields", which is nicely done but sadly, it is nothing new. Two other power metal covers of the song are already available on iTunes, with countless more probably floating around out there. Overall, the three dollars for three songs isn't bad, and serious S.A. fans will want to grab this up to keep their collections complete. On a final note...I've heard the new CD beginning to end as I got an advance copy directly from Nuclear Blast Records. I love it, but some fans will hate it. Gone are the light speed drums of "Wolf And Raven" or "The Cage". They have been replaced with a more symphonic sound and much deeper lyrical work. The CD itself flows excellently from beginning to end and leaves the listener feeling as though they have just experienced something deeply profound and meaningful. If if you were a S.A. fan for their more power metal sound, check out the new CD anyway. You'll probably like it as much as I do. Fun Fact: Tony Kakko, Sonata Arctica's lead singer, actually wrote "Paid In Full" for the winner of the Finnish version of Pop/American Idol. He liked the song so much, he decided to keep it for himself and his band. Now that's interesting!

a delicious taste of things to come

The song "Paid In Full" is simply amazing, I really wish I had a vocal range like that of Tony Kakko so I could sing it to a certain girl that recently broke my heart. The radio edit version as well as the full version are equally listenable. Also, the cover of the Gary Moore classic "Out In The Fields" is certainly not one to forget, as the original is one of my favorite songs ever. I'm really looking forward to the new album Unia, which comes out in 9 more days!

Style Change

This single has masked it but Sonata Arctica has totally changed their style in their new album "Unia" The album contains not one fast-paced song like Black Sheep or The Cage. They are all slow. They sound different but they are still a good band. I personally like their old style better but a litlle change is good. On this single paid in full delivers great "old-style" sonata and they did an excellent cover of Out In the Fields. Overall a great single, but does not really show what the new album "Unia" will be like.

Biography

Years Active: '00s

Finnish prog metal quartet Sonata Arctica specializes in a soaring, orchestral variation on European heavy metal, fusing the sweeping, romantic bombast of bands like Europe with the over-the-top instrumental chops of Dream Theater. Born in 1996, the band, which included vocalist Tony Kakko, guitarist Jani Liimatainen, drummer Tommy Portimo, keyboardist Mikko Harkin, and bassist Janne Kivilahti, recorded a handful of demos before releasing their first single, "UnOpened," on Spinefarm Records in July...
