iTunes Review
On Painful, the Hoboken, New Jersey-based indie-rock trio showed they could get loose and, for want of a better word, jam. Around the time of this album (1993), the band started playing shows under the name Sleeping Pill, exploding minimalist drone-rock in small clubs. Painful has the most originals on a Yo La Tengo album to date (the sole cover a gem by the Only Ones), and it's here that the band begins to fully meld their interests in classic pop harmonies, repetitive dreamscapes and noisy experimentation. On songs such as "Big Day Coming," "Sudden Organ," and "From A Motel 6, "they realized they could put all these things within the same song. A nearly perfect album.

perfect.
this albums perfect. i dont know what else to say other than this is an ESSENTIAL album for anyone who has ever even just heard of yo la tengo
It is Not Painful to listen
With the droning organs coming in on Big Day Coming you know this is going to be one of the best albums you have ever. Painful and I Can Hear The Heart Beating As One are probably my two favorite albums of the 90's. But Big Day Coming is a perfect track. Notice that I said perfect because it is. It is 7 minutes of full blown perfect music. I just can't tell you how amazing this band is. Yes, Pavement is awesome but this is better no offense fellow Pavement fans but I just love my Yo La Tengo.
Yo La Tengo's Painful: The Best Album of the 1990's!
Yo La Tengo are the most heavy and mellow band still performing today (as of 2006) and Painful is the type of album that gets better and better as it plays. Big Day Coming is the opening track and eases you into YLT's world, A loud electric version of this song is also on the cd. From A Motel 6 is a masterpiece. Every song on this CD is great, especially Sudden Organ, I Heard You Looking, and The Whole Of The Law. I think Yo La Tengo should be elected President!
