Excellent, focused songwriting
I was a Mighty Lemon Drops fan back in the day -- I feel like they got lost in the shuffle between the end of 80s "college rock" and the beginning of the Nirvana alt-rock boom of the 90s, and unfairly so. Their albums still hold up. It is amazing to hear that David Newton, the voice of that band, has only improved as a songwriter -- each of these songs features mammoth, gorgeous hooks, tight and angular arrangements and some phenomenal singing and harmonizing. A great end-of-year surprise from Mr. Newton to whom I grant the rare five-star rating. Great work, sir.
Addictive, purely joyful songs...
I absolutely love this EP. I hear elements of some of my favorite bands from the era when the Mighty Lemon Drops were on the charts, but this is not some cheap nostalgia trip. This is a breath of fresh air. As the reviewer before me so rightly states, this is a triumph in songwriting and arranging. Great work, David Newton and Thee Mighty Angels. Can't wait to hear more from you lot.
