iTunes Review

Produced by the great Chips Moman and recorded at Nelson’s home studio in Spicewood, Texas, this album has depth and simplicity that can come only come from two veterans. Nelson and Haggard connect over their laid-back phrasing and penchant for jazzy arrangements, qualities that come alive on “It’s My Lazy Day,” “My Mary” and “My Life’s Been a Pleasure.” The performances are precise yet unhurried, and there is a rare communion in hearing each man share in the other’s songs, especially when Haggard steps up for an achingly slow reading of Nelson’s “Half a Man.” It would have been easy for the pair to roll out an old chestnut for the album’s centerpiece, but instead they dug up “Pancho & Lefty,” which at that time was still an obscure song by the cult folk singer Townes Van Zandt. The duo set Van Zandt’s ambiguous road tale to a steady pulse and found gold, tapping directly into the mystery of the song. It is not only the defining song of the album, but one of the defining songs of the early ‘80s.

Customer Reviews

Nothing against the other reviews.....

but the sleeper on this album has to be "All the Soft Places to Fall". These two ramblers, (Haggard and Nelson), sing about the simple and ultimate pleasure of sleeping without having their backs to the wall after a life full of women, smokin', and good alky-hol. Just lookin' for a home life with clean smellin' sheets.......

You really have to listen to this album

I had this album in the 80s but I fogot how really good this is. Of course the Townes Van Zandt Pancho & Lefty was the radio classic. But you have to listen to the songs Reasons to Quit and then No Reason to Quit about living lifes excesses. This is truly a great Willie Nelson and a great Merle Haggard album.

Poncho and Lefty

This album came out when I was 11 and every summer my whole entire family got together in Yosemite and camped for 2 weeks... Each night playing this album and all the songs late into the night and bye the time the first night was over I could sing every word on every song... The music will forever connect me to a time when family life was simple and being in such a beautiful place as Yosemite this album helped unite us all each night at our campfire.~~•this is a must have if your a fan of good old country music!!

As a performer and a songwriter, Merle Haggard was the most important country artist to emerge in the 1960s, and he became one of the leading figures of the Bakersfield country scene in the '60s. While his music remained hardcore country, he pushed the boundaries of the music quite far. Like his idol, Bob Wills, his music was a melting pot that drew from all forms of traditional American music — country, jazz, blues, and folk — and in the process, developed a distinctive style of his...
