iTunes Review

Finland-based house producer Sasu Ripatti records under the monikers Uusitalo, Vladislav Delay, and of course the more song-oriented and hugely successful Luomo. This 2006 "glitch house" album is one of those very rare dance collections that speaks as much to the dancefloor groovers moving about languidly as the furrowed-brow "Intelligent Dance Music" enthusiasts listening at home through fancy headphones while posting diatribes on Internet messsage boards. Ripatti might intellectually tinker about with house music's synth wash plus beats plus house diva formula, but never at the expense of rhythm or release. A few songs such as "Let You Know" are downright sensuous, while others like the jazzy, dub-pop "The Tease Is Over" have pretty huge pop hooks working for them (as well as the lovely vocals of Johanna Ivanainen). His most straightforward release under his most straightforward secret identity, the biggest complaint is that the songs aren't stretched out from five and seven minutes into a dozen. Of course, that would make them less poppy, but these are worlds the listener aches to spend more time inside of!

Tasty Electro Jams Stay Simple, Highly Replayable.

This is juicy, past-future electro with r&b undertones at it's best. Finnish artist Vladislav Delay, a.k.a. Luomo, stays true to his sophisticated textual de-constructive style and production values while creating an extremely warm, saturated and punchy, circa 1980's demo-cassette-tape sound. The tone-setting female cooing vocal cuts and r&b-ish bassy grooves stay familiar, "pleasant" and simple enough to show they're deliberate; floating in timeless space that should provide high replay value. Vladislav's Intelligent-Dance-Music sensibilities make sure Paper Tigers never steps into jazzy or soft-porn-soundtrack. "The Tease Is Over" is the only track that provides full vocal verses. The way "Dirt Me" effortlessly mangles break-beat scratches over sci-fi soundtrack grooves, is truly sublime. "Wana Tell" might be the epitome 80's production nod, and delivers a satisfying, almost-mid-tempo-dancable jam. "Good to Be With" kicks out an evolving, 129 BPM dance floor sex-it-up with a memorable, subtle hook. Small gathering or solo, a chilled drink, low lighting and candles will mix well with Luomo's deep and dubby Paper Tigers. The tracks show consistency, and stay back enough to allow conversation while still cutting through and delivering an edgy, atmospheric soundscape.

Solid, but Ruined

Easy high-class beats under some trash vocals and questionable effects. There's potential, but this doesn't shine.

LOVE IT TO DEATH

a little less slick and shiny than previous Luomo albums, but it bothers me none! This is my favorite producer EVER! It remains the work of a genius.... Wikipedia: "Paper Tiger": In 1956, Mao Zedong said of the United States: “In appearance it is very powerful but in reality it is nothing to be afraid of; it is a paper tiger. Outwardly a tiger, it is made of paper, unable to withstand the wind and the rain. I believe the United States is nothing but a paper tiger."

Initially, Luomo was just another of Finnish producer Vladislav Delay's many monikers, but after a few EPs for Force Tracks, it became far and away his most celebrated and commercially viable. Delay (born Sasu Ripatti) first began to garner acclaim in 1999, when the Berlin-based boutique label Chain Reaction released a series of experimental dub EPs bearing his name. The subsequent year, he began releasing music via another esteemed Germany label, Force Inc. He adopted a pair of monikers for this...
