Simply Brilliant Fado!!

Ana Moura truly accomplishes something incredible in the world of fado with her "Para Alem Da Saudade" (What's Past Longing), marking the fifth year of the 27-year-old's career. With performances in places as widespread as Lisbon, Paris, and even Carnegie Hall, Portugal's young talent of fado fails to conjure and dissappointment from fans of fado with this new album. Not only is the emotion perfectly represented in the haunting tunes of the Portuguese guitar, but Moura's voice only further personifies the lyrics themselves. A definite "must buy" for fans of fado and those who wish to listen to it for the first time. And if you're just looking for a teaser first, download "Os Buzios," her first single off the album, and you'll be sure to buy the rest of the album within minutes!!

For those unfamiliar with the genre, it might help to think of it as the folk-blues of Portugal, less because of its sound and more because of the sensibility: Acoustic instuments supporting highly accessible melodies of misfortune and broken hearts. Moura has a wonderful, expressive voice. In performance, she is both riveting and utterly charming. I have no idea where she stands with fado purists, but I know of no better way to discover this haunting, lovely music than by listening to her.
