iTunes Review
Of all the folksingers of the ‘60s, none could compare to Judy Collins. Her amazing range brought in listeners who might not always be sympathetic to the raw voices of the medium. As a result, Collins often served as an introduction for the day’s most valued songwriters. This 2010 release is another wide-ranging collection where Joan Baez’s song to Bob Dylan, “Diamonds and Rust,” with a special guest vocal from Baez, meets up with Tom Paxton’s “Last Thing On My Mind,” with Stephen Stills singing alongside her. Judy Garland’s “Over the Rainbow” is chilling. Tim Buckley’s “Once I Was” and “Weight of the World” are timely songs, tunes about young soldiers off to war and not always making it back alive. “Ghost Riders In the Sky” remains an ominous, timeless melody that Collins deserves. She enlists a serious core of back-up singers (Tom Paxton, Bob Neuwirth, Joe Hurley). The album finishes with Jimmy Webb’s “Gaugin” where the legendary painter seeks the paradise of the album’s title in the seas of the South Pacific. At 71, and coming up on fifty years of records, Collins is still an amazing singer and interpreter of modern song.

Paradise
Paradise indeed! I've been an ardent fan for decades and I never cease to be amazed at Ms. Collins' longevity. One has to wonder how she reamins a beautiful vibrant woman whose voice keeps getting better with age. Other folk icons like Mary Travers have, tragically left us leaving a huge painful void. I still cry at the loss of one third of the most important folk influence of the last century. Ms. Collins' peers such as the brilliant Joni Mitchell, have not been able to retain their voices the way Judy has. Perhaps it's Joni's battle with nicotine? It's unfortunate because I miss the anticipation of a new venture from Ms. Mitchell. Judy Collins' voice has been described as "liquid silver", after listening to this collection I wonder if that description does her voice justice.
If you were to put this CD in and play it for someone who is or was a fan, that person would find it hard to believe that this voice has blessed this earth for over 70 years. Ghost Riders In The Sky reminds me of Judy's 1973 song Che, from True Stories and Other Dreams. The interesting thing is her voice is better today than it was in 1973! Diamonds and Rust with the magnificent Joan Baez is simply one of the best duets ever recorded. I'm a huge fan of Ms. Baez to this day, but her voice has not remained the precision instrument it once was. There's no way for us to know who organized this restrained and elegant performance from Joan Baez in this duet, but it's absolutely brilliant. This duet of Diamonds and Rust is better than Joan's original recording, and everyone knows that original recording has stood the test of time.
Dens of Yarrow is a tasteful, haunting Celtic influenced masterpiece that simply demonstrates Judy Collins sounds better than she did thirty years ago. Weight Of The World, to me is more than a song, it's a "sound picture" that illustrates Judy Collins is still there as a strong and pure voice opposed to the horrors of war. If you can't visualize the harsh tragedy of a soldier's casket being lowered into the frozen earth of December, play the song again and you will.
For us Crosby Stills and Nash fans, the duet with Stephen Stills is a treat! One can almost feel the chemistry between the two of them, chemistry that gave us a rock classic, Suite Judy Blue Eyes. I had to wonder if Judy's husband, the tastefully brilliant designer Louis Nelson was present for that recording session. Just kidding, but Judy and Stephen were a hot couple! If you've seen the Korean War Veteran's Memorial, you'll understand why I call Mr. Nelson brilliant.
If you were once a fan or you're not aware of Judy Collins' work, I urge you to purchase this CD. You will not be able to play it just once the first time, trust me. This collection is outstanding. Take a look at Ms. Collins' website, she's booked solid into 2011! Not bad for a woman over 70 years old whose first major recording was released in 1961. I only wish I could rate this higher than 5 stars! Judy, please record for another 49 years!
I don't normally rate albums, but this one I had to. I hope you'll forgive me for going on and on, I realize this sounds more like a "love letter" than a review, but I adore this album and I adore her!
She's Still Got It
It is very fun to listen to Judy Collins this far down the road and realize that some things do not really change. Her voice is still clear, her musical bent tends towards social justice issues. Just like always. Terrific album. My iPod is filled with the likes of Lady Gaga, Fleet Foxes, Pink and so on. It is nice to have a little oasis of Judy Collins amongst the others!
Vintage Judy
Once again Judy Collins shows us why she's lasted all these years. With her achingly beautiful soprano she breathes new life into classics Over The Rainbow & adds her unique stamp to Diamonds and Rust with fellow folky Joan Baez. All in all it's a treat to listen to these two old pros, thanks ladies!
