Great Album

Great vocals and harmonic guitar!

This is my trapped-on-a-desert-island CD.

Perfect! The lyrics from front to back are all so introspective and subtle, yet profound when examined closely (I've often wondered what Jim Matheos was going thru when he penned them). This is THE culminative prog-metal album. If you seek awe-inspiring circus theatrics, see Dream Theater; this, rather, is just great music. The overall sound is lush and balanced. The time-changes and guitar harmonies are brilliant and perfectly executed. Zonder is arguably the most creative drummer ever. His subtle use of samples really completes the ensemble's sound. And Alder's voice shows lots of maturity when compared to his 2 earlier works.

Solid, but not spectacular

This album is where Fates started to move to more of a "Commercial approach". What strikes me as particularly moving about this period of Fates, is the deepness of the lyrics. While there are some great individual songs, its the powerful emotion that the lyrics draw out of the listener that really make this album stand out. If this is the first Fates album you buy, you won't be disappointed. Keep in mund, the 30 second clips offered here on iTunes don't always do justice to the entire complexity of the song.... You will enjoy this, but it may take several listens to really appreciate. It really depends on how open minded one is while listening....

Formed in Hartford, CT in 1983, Fates Warning has endured quite a few lineup changes since its inception, with the exception of guitarist Jim Matheos, who has been present...
