Customer Reviews

5 stars even though it should be listed as a partial album.

At the time this was released, Malathini, the Queens and The Band That Knows Everything were easily one of the top 3 to 5 popular music aggregations on the planet. Of any genre. And maybe even the best of them all. If there were a Planetary Pop Music Hall of Fame, they'd be charter members. They toured the US frequently and were consistently transcendent live. Unfortunately, band leader West Nkosi, guitarist Marks Mankwane and even Mahlathini himself didn't live to see the century turn, and this album is now one of the only ways to hear them with this classic line-up. The original release of this album is unquestionably one of the greatest African music albums of all time. However, it has two cuts missing from the release available here on iTunes, both special remixes -- the explosive seven-minute "Yebo!" and a dance remix of "Kazet", the lead tune. If you had this then, note that this version is not quite the same item as the original. If it's new to you, don't hesitate. They were awesome then and these eight cuts are ample evidence as to why. Unique polyrythmic arrangements, clear production, great tunes, terrific musicianship, three swooping unison female voices and the one and only Lion of Soweto. If you're curious in any way, click Preview All. If you're not a convert by the end of cut 2, I can't help you.

Georgeous and upbeat world music.

Mahotellah & the Queens are probably the most famous of the south african music style known as mbqanqa. Think of rhythmic American soul music from the 60's but speed it up, add high melodic guitars and make it sweet sounding, then add African harmonies that are all in major keys and which will make you hum along even if you have no idea what they're singing about (though on this album they throw in some English for an American audience).
Sublime guitar work, incredible rhythm section, beautiful upbeat harmonies and to top it all off one of the best frontman ever, groaning frontman . I defy someone to not listen to this and not be uplifted or at the very least not tap their feet to the music.
