iTunes Review

Indie retro-poppers Dr. Dog spent some time in 2007 digging up four- and eight-track recordings from the last five years, finding a handful of diamonds in the rough worthy of further studio treatment for Passed Away, Vol. 1.  Smartly, the band avoided over-polishing these filed away gems, and the organic, uneven and sometimes pained take on each song is what gives the collection real heart. Fans of low-fi, “bedroom” music will swoon to the warm, recorded-in-a-coat-closet fuzz wrapped around “I’m Standing in the Light” and “Little Bird,” and do a double-take on “Going Home,” which eerily evokes John Lennon at his living room piano. There’s a bit of spirited fun in “Oh My God,” which has all the markings of a late-night hootenanny winding down amid empty bottles and a dying fire. The real find is the seven minute opus, “The Man Who Was Wrong,” with its Leonard Cohen-styled guitar strumming, deflated vocals and burst of noisy self-flagellating at the end conveying anguished, romantic regret. Passed Away is a solid, complex work, offering – rough edges and all –  a deeper connection to the band.

Amazing 60s-pop revival

I've been a fan of Dr. Dog since Easy Beat, and they've only gotten better and taken their sound to new levels with time. This compilation of lost songs is a fantastic lo-fi presentation of their repetoire, and there is nothing more fufilling than hearing 'Beer Can' follow 'Little Bird', which makes a great pen-ultimate track. If you are a fan of the Beatles, the Beach Boys or the Band, then you will be instantly hooked. Even if you are interested in that Indie drone on the radio, this will leave you begging more more music, especially the kind of a higher degree and disregard for airwave trends. I strongly recommend this to anyone.

Best song is The Man Who Was Wrong

Everything about that song sends chills down your spine.

Biography

Formed: 1999 in Philadelphia, PA

Genre: Alternative

Years Active: '90s, '00s, '10s

The Philadelphia-based Dr. Dog are part of a long tradition of D.I.Y. pop oddballs who blend unapologetic '60s pop worship with lo-fi recording techniques and an apparent disregard for current trends. The group began as a part-time offshoot of the more traditional indie rock act Raccoon. Over the course of several years, guitarist Toby Leaman and drummer Scott McMicken found enough free time to record the casual, sprawling 35-track set The Psychedelic Swamp in a basement rehearsal space, finally...
