Immortal Masterpiece

I am not going to write a "review," because any efforts to compare this work to anything is an exercise in futility. When this album came out in 1989, it blew open a sonic inventory that hadn't ever really been heard before. 20 years later, it still stands out as a masterwork of composition, production, and engineering. This album more than any other I've ever heard really evokes a sense of place. WHAT place will depend on the listener... Half the album sounds like Peter Gabriel invented an orchestra of alien instruments that you might find in a Dr. Seuss book. It's haunting, moving, and beautiful. If you like instrumental music, if you like "world" music... You owe it to yourself to listen to this... ESPECIALLY on headphones.

Passion

This entire CD was the soul of my life for now over 20 years, I found this to be one of the greatest musical mater pieces in the world and it stands still to this day by itself
Thank you Peter Gabriel you are an inspiration to many of my greatest accomplishments

Absolutely Original

It's hard to imagine a soundtrack getting any better. "The Last Temptation of Christ" was an unnecessarily controversial movie--all those protestors carrying signs and they hadn't even seen it--so this soundtrack was largely overlooked. Peter Gabriel's songs and lyrics are some of the most detailed, soulful, and introspective experiences. For this soundtrack, Gabriel assembles acoustic and electronic sounds from across the globe to create a unique sound palette like nothing I've ever heard. Even apart from the film, the soundtrack holds together and tells its own story. The music transports you to other worlds and lifts you into a new realm of being. Close listening with headphones only brings out more and more astonishing detail. This is a unique experience, and highly recommended.

As the leader of Genesis in the early '70s, Peter Gabriel helped move progressive rock to new levels of theatricality. He was no less ambitious as a solo artist, but he was more subtle in his methods. With his first eponymous solo album in 1977, he began exploring darker, more cerebral territory, incorporating avant-garde, electronic, and worldbeat influences into his music. The record, as well as its two similarly titled successors, established Gabriel as a critically acclaimed cult artist, and...
