At almost 20 songs long, Passion, Pain & Pleasure is like two albums in one. The first half is a follow-up to Trey Songz’s smash 2009 album Ready, with playful bedroom songs like “Love Faces,” “Massage” and “Doorbell.” This is Trey’s comfort zone — it’s what he does best, but it’s also nice to see the singer venture into new territory on the second half of this album. “Red Lipstick” is a dense, dizzying soundscape, while the brooding “Unfortunate” is a rejoinder to Kanye West’s recent hits “Heartless” and “Love Lockdown.” The songs at the end of the album push the boundaries even further. “Blind” is a rock song along the lines of Coldplay while “You Just Need Me” is a club song comparable to Lady Gaga. While both songs are obvious cash-ins on recent trends, it’s good to see Trey pushing himself and these songs give some sense of where he could go in the future. Despite the new ideas fans of traditional smooth R&B will be satiated by a trio of songs in the album’s midsection. “Can’t Be Friends,” “Please Return My Call” and “Made to Be Together” form a superlative mini-album within the larger framework of Passion, Pain & Pleasure.

Trey Songz should have let the momentium from Ready marinate and enjoy the hard labor that that disc brought him,lay low,let folks miss you and when you return be ready.This new disc is a setback from each release he takes it up a step,Ready was his peak and a downward spiral has begun with this disc,outdated production,sloppy writing, tired measures to get a hit with the artist who lacks real talent Nicki Minaji.Trey really expected you would come back with the flair that got you new fans,but you about to lose them in the process.The new release should have come around the holiday season or the new year.Hardly no one knew this new disc was coming, Atlantic Records and Kevin Lyles should be questioned for the worst PR done for an artist who last release made waves and he does deserve better even though the material is mediocre at best,This is a one star release,don't buy it,listen for it on the radio and please put Ready and the other discs before a second,third or fourth listen, for i barely stomach to listen to this 2010 Trey Songz release. D'Angelo you need to return as does Donnell Jones,Anthony Hamilton-miss real singing,production,no gimmicks.Trey step it up next time, No grammy nominations for this travesty of music released.
