iTunes Review

Some of ’60s psychedelia’s most ominous and most joyous moments came in AM radio hits that carried a whiff of bandwagon jumping, if not outright bubblegum chewing. Austin’s Black Angels carry that tradition forward, teetering on a line between severity and silliness that recalls the Doors, the Jesus and Mary Chain and early Psychedelic Furs. Passover, though, also connects its droogish evocations of Vietnam to the warring ’00s; from “Young Men Dead” to “The Sniper at the Gates of Heaven” and “Bloodhounds on My Trail,” the record feels shadowed by action on the streets of Baghdad. The Angels lighten up, relatively, for the beer-sodden Cramps-style stomp of “Better Off Alone.” Regardless of what you make of Alex Maas’ foreboding mutters, the fuzzy, wah-wahed-drenched guitars and smacking drums will feed your head.

PHENOMENAL!!!

Absolutely the best new band to hit the scene in years! I had been counting down the days until their full length release ever since I got their EP. They remind me of The Doors a little bit. Definitely a throwback IMO. One of the cool things about The Black Angels is that their lyrics are not just thrown together. They convey a deep sense of meaning. Listen to 'The First Vietnamese War'..."You sent me overseas and put the fear in me." This album is already at the top of my list for 2006. Do yourself a favor and buy this album, you won't be disappointed!

Ouch my eye!

These guys rip my face off!!!

One of the Best CD's I've Heard

I buy and listen to a ton of music. This is one of the most amazing albums that I have discovered in recent times. A massive pounding unpretentious album that is overtly original but also pays homages to the influences of the Velvet Underground, the Doors and modern bands like Black Rebel Motorcycle Club. Politically charged lyrics with buzzing fantastic guitars. Buy it!

The sultry neo-psychedelic sound of the Black Angels came together in spring 2004.
