Tapestry of Webs

Tapestry of Webs

Past Lives is a Seattle-based group consisting of former members of The Blood Brothers, with ex-Shoplifting guitarist Morgan Henderson filling out the lineup. With solid if unassuming Seattle producer extraordinaire Steve Fisk behind the board for the band’s debut album, Tapestry of Webs is a bright mix of sounds and styles that veers from the slow, reflective pace of “Paralyzer” into the quirky house-shake of “Falling Spikes” where singer Jordan Billie tweaks his delivery to sound like Pere Ubu’s David Thomas undergoing an anxiety attack. The group’s crafty arrangements include backing vocals that emulate a twisted choir and instrumental pieces that threaten to detonate into chaos (“Past Lives”). “Deep in the Valley” hushes the ensemble to a quivering whisper with a gentle angelic touch to hide the real fury. “Hex Takes Hold” dives back into the hysteria, while “Vanishing Twin” evokes the tuneful Goth march of the 1980s. “Hospital White” sports a ‘70s-80s Brit Pop kick.
