iTunes Review

Like their peers Hella and Maps & Atlases, this Sacramento combo fuses prog-rock with hardcore punk to create a nerve-frying meld both cerebral and giddy. The tracks skitter between manic thrash outbursts and extended faux-serene passages; catchy melodies emerge from churning jams only to be flayed and strangled. The band favors a reverb-bathed production strategy on most tunes, adding to the mostly opaque nature of their lyrics. What matters most, though, is the sheer hyperactive audacity of Nick Reinhart’s frenetic guitar thrusts, Nate Latona’s agile, jazz-rooted bass work and Vince Rogers’ pummeling drum attack. The trio rips through intricate numbers like “Aped,” “In Citrus Heights” and “Party With Gina” fearlessly, calling up echoes of Captain Beefheart and the Minutemen in their glory days. From the gargling funk of “Trident Tail” to the bouncy, falsetto-accented “The Skin Surf” and the spongy, slinky groove of “Frozen Zoo,” Tera Melos prod and poke at the extremes of their sound. Frequently amazing and occasionally brilliant.

Only Band To Not Break Up Lately And It Pays Off

Holy Sh!t... Don't listen to this with anyone remotely talkative around. They'll ruin it. Tape everyones mouth shut for the first time through the entire cd. And I do mean the entire thing because chopping up this cd into songs is like killing a WHOLE LITTER of kittens in front of their mother. ADD/ADHD listeners beware. The signature "uncomfortable Tera Melos WTF is going on" parts are all here. But they make you feel good and squirmy. John Clardy owns! Vince couldn't be filled in for by anyone else. Guitar tone to slay all guitar tones. Vox are stuck in my head already. Imaginative, creative, ingenious, innovative are words I would definitely throw around describing this, it's one of a kind for sure. My roomate didn't like it at first. He needs a dancey beat to feel at peace with himself. But I'm taking dragging him to see Tera Melos because everyone has to see them live 9+ times in their life.

Musical Hope Lives

P-RATS

If you appreciate talent when you see it, do yourself a favor and pick this record up. These guys are 100% genuine, plain and simple. I am always so happy to see so much great feedback about this record and band all over the internet, it is such well-deserved and long overdue credit. If you like supporting real hard-working musicians and keeping real music alive, purchase this band's music. It's a measly 7 dollars. You have 7 dollars to spare. If you don't like this record then there is probably something wrong with your ears. You should get that checked out.

Finally a good album this year.

If you're unsure if you should buy this then listen to A New Uniform/Patagonia. And see them live!

Biography

Formed: Sacramento, CA

Genre: Alternative

Years Active: '00s

Melding the aggression of punk with the technical intricacies of prog rock, math rock trio Tera Melos use jerky shifts in time signatures and disjointed guitar noodling that bears a close resemblance to Don Caballero and Hella. Like their counterparts in instrumental rock, finger-tapped guitar parts are the centerpiece, complemented by angular bass riffs and splintered spaz-jazz drumming, but contrasting dynamics are a bigger focus of the band's songs, with ambient electronics and sparse vocal lines...
