Album Review

The musical collaboration of Heavens was born when Josiah Steinbrick (ex-F-Minus) played some instrumental tracks he had previously laid down to his housemate Matt Skiba (of Alkaline Trio fame). Excited by the music's potential, they began working together, the latter penning lyrics, and after fleshing everything out with producer Ben Lovett in the studio — who did an excellent job bringing it all together — the duo's striking debut, Patent Pending, was complete. Twice removed from the punk dominating their other respective bands, and riddled with the influence of Depeche Mode, Brian Eno and the Sisters of Mercy, the album is a shadowy, somber collection of songs that relies heavily on synths and drum programming, and which would serve well as the backdrop to a solitary, midnight stroll through a quiet, misty cemetery. As always, Skiba's brooding sentiments fall in the realm of the murderous, disturbing, and otherworldly. His voice is an absolute perfect match for Steinbrick's dark instrumental musings, singing in a much lower register than the norm for Alkaline Trio. But Skiba in no way carries the whole project himself, as the yin to his yang is the impressive songwriting of Steinbrick, who has provided a canvas of crisp, austere soundscapes that are extremely clean, yet not overly produced. The arrangements are methodical and engaging, whether in the despondence driving the string-laden "Heather," the lively programming and paranormal harmonies of the title track, or the ominous post-punk stalking of "Watching You." As if one really expected any less from this partnering of musicians, Patent Pending is an accomplished album and one of the most rewarding listens you'll find all year.

AK3 fans, Do Not Avoid Getting This Album

A lot of my friends who like AK3 were disappointed with this CD and kind of kept me away from it. 1 month after the release I bought this album, and since then, its probably one of those albums I cant stop listening. I play all the tracks in order,no skipping and it is just an amazing album to relax and enjoy. Deep lyrics and great sound makes this a must have album. Heather and Annabelle are probably my favorite songs since I had gf's with those names.

Just an aside...

I have heard some rumbling from Alk3 fans that they were "saddened" by this album. If you didn't see this coming you weren't paying attention to the career of Alkaline. All of the same influences were there, just not pushed as far to the forefront as this album (the Alk3 cover of "Metro", come on, did you need a neon sign?) And, for the love of god remember, this is a side project, and a @#$!! good one at that. Try to open your mind, painful though it may be...

Matt Skiba comes through again.

Wonderful! Not a word I use everyday, but Matt and his friend there made a very revealing gift to the world. Once again Mr. Skiba has made me feel like I'm not alone in this world, by having feelings of love and hate so intertwined together. Thank you, all of your projects have been completely sucessful in what they were set out to do. Alkaline Trio June 20th @ the Crocodile Rock in Allentown,PA 18106.

Heavens is the musical collaboration between friends Alkaline Trio guitarist Matt Skiba and F-Minus bassist Josiah Steinbrick. Relocating from Chicago to Los Angeles in the early 2000s, Skiba became a housemate with East Coast native Steinbrick. Spending downtime together hanging out and listening to records, Steinbrick one day played Skiba some instrumental tracks he'd previously recorded; instantly falling in love with the songs, the two soon began writing together.
